Oh, you won't get any argument from me re rhinos versus hippos! I've had years of enjoying watching people's eyes get hugely wide when I point out that hippos kill and injure far more people in hippo-y places than any so-called kingofthejungle ever did!
Have you seen the mostly wonderful BBC telly series, Last Chance to See, that came out a couple of years ago? There's an episode devoted to seeking out the almost-extinct Northern White Rhino; the episode contains a lovely prank played on Stephen Fry by one of the rhino-minders and his rather tame ward. Took the pretentiousness right out of Fry's mouth for a moment there, which is no mean feat :P
(I've adored most of Fry's work for decades now, and I do LOVE LOVE LOVE him as the compere of Q.I., but he does come across as awfully up himself. In fact, if you want to get the best out of Last Chance to See, go for the hardcover version. It's written primarily by co-presenter Mark Carwardine, it does an amazing job of getting across most of the visual feel in text, and while Carwardine does a lot of 'Stephen said...', there's none of the me-me-me feel of Fry in the video'd flesh.)
