Of all the many aspects of this story which make my mouth try on interesting shapes to explore, I find the picture of most note:   Conrad Black - whose name graces the cutline of said picture - might also be ... bemused. Yes. Yes, we shall go with bemused ....

That would be because the picture is illustrative not of the master of Crossharbour himself, but Black's former BFF, the ambulatory pile of weasel offal whose mother knows him as David Radler.

To me, Black's request for clemency would seem little more than pathetic except for a sneaking suspicion that Black honestly believes he deserves clemency. I mean, hasn't he already gone through the necessary motions to please the plebes?!?!?...

Your suspicion is undoubtedly correct. Half of the horrific attraction, when it comes to watching this man's progress through life, lies in the realization that he does in fact, believe he did absolutely nothing wrong. Unless there is a vast sea change in his heart, he'll go to his death thinking the same thing.
