And, Wow, the Bicycle's Just Fine

It's just me who's been a little lackadaisical. I've been busy, mind you, doing adult-type stuff. And I'm happy about that.

It's nice to be able to finally post, and not be whining about things.

Computer success, FTW! )

Medical progress  )

Wills and credit cards, woo-hoo! )

Finally, returning to better things than adulthood: I'm on my fifth, yes fifth, Arcane AU fic. I still can't get it out of my system. I'm also very close to finishing the novel (yes, I know I say that a lot, but at this point, we're close to the execution of one villain by our two protagonists, and the subsequent upending of their world's economic and political order. Sort of. I'm writing both at the same time, bouncing from one to the other. And I need to finish my 8,000-word-thus-far 13th Doctor massive crossover fic. Oh, and the original short story ...

Huh. A lot of writing to do. Also, editing the young gentleman's fic is still on the table.

There. Now you're caught up!

Wait, I successfully made cabbage rolls tonight, and I'm still making our bread, with varying degrees of success. So there's that as well.

Oh, and Trump minion Peter Navarro got arrested, handcuffed, and put in leg irons today. Life is good.

OMG

OK, I thought I was entering dangerous fannish waters when I started reading Entirely Too Much "Guardian" fanfic (which I continue to do, even though I haven't visited the Guardian communities, bad fan me, but I digress.)

Now?

Help me, Obi Fan Kenobi -

- I'm writing an Arcane fixit.

Rout 66

Nope, that isn't a spelling mistake. That's the first four letters of my last name, and the number of years I have, as of Sept. 17, been on this twirling globe of beauty and horror.

Pronounce it as you would "paper route", something I used to say a lot when I was a working reporter ....

.... oh, for heaven's sake, not "root".

"Rowt." Which is how I
 pronounce my name.

Oh. Well. Well, yes, "root" is also appropriate for the tit - .

No. No, it isn't. goddammit.

Ah, well. I amuse myself.

Any others can come along for the ride.

Notes From Opie Land

Over the last three days, I've discovered that Opie, our 14-year-old ginger kitty loves Marmite. I mean, he looooves Marmite. I discovered this while I was indulging my own love of the stuff (WHAT??!?) over the weekend.

He came up to where I was seated on the livingroom couch and began sniffing at my Marmite-smeared saltine crackers (WHAT!?!??) with the kind of obsessive focus he normally reserves for ... well, he doesn't normally have much obsessive focus for human food. Or he didn't until now. I put some on my fingers, which he proceeded to lick clean. Then he attempted to bite one of the fingers. This didn't go over well with The Producer of Wonderful Brown Pasty Stuff, so he was placed on the floor. Later, however, I decided that Marmite might be one way to get medications into him if absolutely necessary, I told Bob about this. Bob is not a fan of Marmite. Nope. Not a fan. He just looked as if he couldn't figure out who to side-eye more, me or Opie. In the end, I think we both got a serious dose.

Then yesterday, when I was enjoying some Marmite-free saltine crackers (WHA - oh, never mind.) Opie came up to me, sniffed at the cracker in my hand - then tried to wrestle it from me by biting into a large portion of it. This had the effect of scattering an explosion of saltine cracker across me and the livingroom table, but he was able, with a little help from me, to actually swallow some not-inconsequentially-sized morsels of cracker.

Opie is a weird ass little cat.

Me, Glorious Me! Kinda. Sorta. Occasionally.

Challenge #7 -  Promote/Rec/Sing the Praises of Yourself!

The world tells us we must be humble, we must take a compliment, but never to compliment ourselves. Never toot our own horn and many other cliches about how to be proper and not overbearingly egotistical. We at FSC say, f&#k that! Tell us of all the ways you are the BEST! All the things you’ve done, want to do or will one day do. All the ways you are marvelously you.

OK ... while I try to figure out a better set of answers to Challenge 6, here's my chance to tell you about how marvelous I am.

You know, this is kind of dangerous one for me, in more than one way.

Firstly: I grew up Northern Baptist and, whilst I am reliably informed by those who grew up Catholic and/or Jewish (or possibly anyone who had a mother or grandmother in the habit of telling them "You're not nearly as [fill in the blank] as you think you are, missy!") that this particular doesn't hobble me nearly as much as their particulars, and whilst Northern Baptists are fairly liberal as Calvinist-derived Protestant Christianity goes, it's still Calvinist-derived, and thus talking myself up still makes me nervous.

Secondly: I'm Canadian.

Thirdly: I have an enormous ego, with which I must wrestle daily. I'm aware that I have gifts, but I try not to talk about them (possibly because of that "Firstly" above and definitely because of that "Secondly"). But that also leaves me with the balancing act of not trying to be too ostentatiously humble.

Yes, of course that's a thing.

Anyhow, let's see if I can do this:

Un-Canadian boasting hereunder )

There, that's it. I can't do it anymore. Mind you, I got pretty verbose there, didn't I?

Oh, and I can navigate my self-penned overly long sentences pretty well. See above.

kaffy_r: (NaruOMG)
The Horror! The Horror ....

I present this to you, knowing that you've probably already seen it. Many thanks to a young friend over on FB, who horrified me with it.

And yet I am delighted. Horrifically delighted. Or delightedly horrified, which might be a more accurate representation of what coursed through my veins as I watched it.

Oh, and second hand embarrassment and schadenfreude.

Still, proof that Giuliani and 45 go back a long, long time (And yes, it is them.) Read more... )

AAAargh!!

I can't post - not about big things, nor about little things. F'list, I'm turning to you.

Ask me questions, and I'll answer them in posts. Ask me fannish questions, ask me about my life, about reporting, about my tastes in food or music, ask me the other answer to life, the universe, and everything (the one that isn't '42'), and I'll answer.

Or at least I'll do my best. And you'll have helped me get back into the posting habit.

A grateful kaffyr thanks you!

(And also thinks she should probably apologize if this seems pretty egocentric. So here's another idea. If you'd like, you could ask me for a fic. Name your characters, and some sort of setup - happy, sad, funny - and I'll try to write something. So, yeah, there's that option.)

Dreams. Go Figure.

I rarely talk about my dreams here. No, wait, I actually never talk about my dreams here.

But last night I dreamed about being in some sort of polyamorous marriage with Mark Ruffalo and Tilda Swinton, and having twins with Ruffalo, a girl named Ishtar and a boy named London. Who I had to introduce to an older boy and girl who I think must have been their half siblings courtesy of Tilda.

I ... I think I'm afraid to go back to sleep.

Ruffalo was absolutely lovely, mind you.

Tales from a condo board president: like many condo buildings with parking lots, our building has a contract with a towing company, to deal with non-approved people parking in the lot.

We're in Chicago, and our contract is with Lincoln Towing Services. If you're from Chicago, you know Lincoln Towing Services as a company of towtruck-driving sharks, cruising through alleys and streets, looking for un-permitted cars to tow. Its history is so replete with tales of towtruck drivers' voracious hunger for towing, and those drivers' lightning quick tow action, that it's become legendary.

How legendary? This legendary:

Yesterday, one of our unit residents who was temporarily using a rental car, and who forgot to put a permit in her window that one fateful Tuesday, got towed. Although it was, ultimately, her fault, I told her I'd try to convince Lincoln Towing to reimburse all or part of the $218.50 it cost her to free the car from its pound. I've put in the call, although I don't expect anyone to call me back; if they do, I don't expect them to reimburse anything.

That's not the point of this post.

When I was put on hold during my first call, guess what music played while I waited?

You damn betcha.

I've got to admire the chutzpah.

I Knew The Bride When She Used to Rock and Roll

You know that part in my profile bio where it says "I used to be a chick singer in an unsuccessful rock and roll band."?

Proof, courtesy of friend and fannish historian
[personal profile] gerisullivan , who unearthed pictures of one of the times the band was successful; when we were guests of honor at the 1985 Minicon, in Minneapolis (and thanks to her for letting me link to her post.)

As I say in the comment I made over there, the picture of me singing with my eyes open was a rare and anomalous moment in entertainment history. I normally could not open my eyes and look at the audience. I have no idea, since I certainly was able to keep my eyes open when I acted onstage.

Jesus Harold Christ, I was young.

Also? I married the handsomest man in the world. Also also, we had the best lawyer-bassist anywhere; Dr. Gonzo.

BB and I have a remarkably non-toxic relationship, and have had one for the past 34 years.

However, I have had, in the past, at least one unbelievably toxic romantic relationship and, throughout my life, remarkably toxic non-romantic relationships.

I ran into this on one of my occasional forays onto Facebook, courtesy of my friend Shirley T. I love it for so many reasons, not least of which are the shiny, shiny clothes on people who Do. Not. Give. A. Fuck. What. You. Think.

Yes, this made today a lot better.

I've Been Thinking

I am old enough* that seeing an airplane go overhead was cause to run out of the house and look to the skies when I was growing up.
I am old enough that the first telephone number I remember was 884.
I am old enough that I remember the excitement when they put a transmitter up that allowed us to get our second television station. In black and white.
I am old enough that I learned to type on a 1930s-era Remington.
I am old enough to remember bristol board, manila paper, paper with the wood chips still in it, and school tests printed in purple aniline dye by a spirit duplicator**
I am old enough that my first comic book cost 8 cents. It went up to 12 cents when I was in fourth or fifth grade.
I am old enough to remember Boer War veterans coming to the Cenotaph on Remembrance Day.***
I am old enough to have listened to the funeral of John F. Kennedy piped through my school classroom****
I am old enough to have sent a telegram unselfconsciously.

I am still young enough to relish all those things.

* .. and lived as a child in a rural enough area ... but it was not in a wilderness.
** or Ditto machine.
***  Hey, I was very young, and the two of them were very old. Very old.
**** And I was in Canada.

Things I Do

Spend years (truly, years) looking at a pair of good snow boots, one of whose side zipper needs to be replaced. Finally take it in, get it replaced. Lose other boot. Or perhaps dropped it off at cobbler's, and forgot to get it back. But if so, why did cobbler not give it back to me?

This is my life.

I decided I would try this. I don't believe I've ever done this before, because I have lots of lovely LJ friends and many here at/over at Dreamwidth. But it couldn't hurt, she said with admirable disregard for Murphy-ish reality.

Maybe I'll see you there; I intend ti go through a lot of the posts over there.

I Am In Mourning. Sort Of.

My lava lamp has died.

I'm not kidding, you guys.

No, really. It was better than soporifics or tranks to chill me out. BB says he's going to check to see if it's just a dead bulb. If it is, he'll find another one. If the whole thing is dead, he says he's going to get me another one. I love that man of man.

 Amusement Accomplished

I've just noticed that my new eyeglass frames, which currently hold temporary lenses to allow me to type, are both TARDIS blue in most lights and, in some lights, slightly jewel-like purple. My two favorite colors in one stylish (but slightly heavier than I've had before) piece of eyewear ... with the number of TARDIS blue things I'm accumulating around the house, not to mention items that might be found inside the little blue box *cough action figures cough* I believe I may have tipped over into overly fannish. Heh.
