That's really beautiful. I never thought of Jackie as an avatar of Demeter before, but it works. Like you, I saw a lot of fear in Jackie. Rose was everything to her. Life had ripped away her husband and her dreams, but she had a daughter. She could look at Rose and say she'd done something right, contributed something to the world. Losing Rose was her worst nightmare, and one that appeared to come true for a while. And even when she has everything--her husband back, another child, wealth--she still goes chasing after Rose to make sure she's safe. A mother's love is powerful, and nowhere near rational.
