kaffy_r: Bill smiles impishly at the Twelfth Doctor (Impish Bill and Twelve)
Title: Favor for a Friend
Author:
[personal profile] kaffy_r
Fandom: Doctor Who/Marvel Cinematic Universe
Characters: Twelfth Doctor, Natasha Romanov, Bill Potts
Words: 3,840
Summary: The blandly bureaucratic alphabet soup acronyms attached to the hulking St. Petersburg building didn't disguise its ominous history. Natasha Romanov knew that intimately. Perhaps that's why the Doctor turned to the Black Widow to rescue a friend caught in its depths.
Author's Note: Not only is this a delayed
[community profile] fandom_stocking 2018 gift for [personal profile] trobadora (who shares my fannish attachment to the Twelfth Doctor, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Natasha Romanov) I forgot to post it here, after posting it on AO3 last April. Lawsey. Anyhow, for those who pay attention, this isn't their first meeting; that took place during "Encounter at the Rembrandt Hotel."
NOTE: For those among my readers who live or have lived in or near St. Petersburg, I hope my use of the original Bolshoy Dom, and its history, as a building block of the story does not come off as thoughtless or flip. It felt very possible that the Russian government, in a world where most governments think of the TARDIS and her Doctor as potential tools, might seek a way to capture her. It also felt right that Natasha, as a survivor of The Red Room program, who want to rescue someone from that building.

Well, This Was A Bit Embarrassing ....

When I was having fun with
[community profile] fandom_stocking this year (or actually, last year), I decided to give one person, who'd indicated an interest in historical recipes, some that were excerpted from two recipe books I happen to own. Because it was for Fandom Stocking, I decided - without looking at AO3's terms of service, more fool I - that I could put it on Archive of Our Own, because the effort was for a fannish event.

The nice folks over at AO3 let me know today that it was a violation of their terms of service, and that I had a week to take it down. I'm embarrassed, because they're quite right (Section H clearly states that recipes are a no-no), and sad that I now have a formal warning on my AO3 account. Hopefully, that will eventually be taken out.

So I've put the recipes here, and will let the person for who I posted them know that they can access them here or on LJ. And perhaps other folks can enjoy the recipes as well. And I've learned something out of the whole thing, so there's that.

Anyhow - enjoy!

Author:
[personal profile] kaffy_r
Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe/The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
Characters: Natasha Romanov, Bruce Banner, Tony Stark, Buckaroo Banzai, Rawhide
Words: 3,509
Summary: "Why do I feel like a kindergartner with a bad attitude when I’m trying to talk to a man whose first name comes straight out of Romper Room?" The teamwork of Tony Stark and Buckaroo Banzai, as witnessed by Natasha Romanov ... and one or two others.
Author's Note: Written belatedly as a fandom_stocking 2018 gift for
[personal profile] olivermoss /Mangotea, who is not only a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but someone who shares my love of one of the most quirky fandoms out there: Buckaroo Banzai. Although they indicated they are rarely fans of fusions, I am throwing myself on their mercy with this crossover between the two fandoms, in hopes that it might tickle their fancy.
NOTE 1: Much of the feel for the Buckaroo Banzai side of this story comes from Earl Mac Rauch's novel "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension!" The novel's style is a loving pastiche of the old "Doc Savage" stories. I hope I've done well by both the movie and Rauch's book.
NOTE 2: Tony's and Natasha's language is pretty salty, at least partly in comparison with B. Banzai.
NOTE 3: Āgerachini is Amharic for "Our Homeland," at least per Google Translate. I apologize to speakers of Amharic if I misused the word

Title: Floral Makeup and Other Follies
Author:
[personal profile] kaffy_r
Fandom: Dr. Who
Characters: the Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams, River Song
Words: 2,063
Summary: As floral arrangements went, it was rather too large, and altogether too carnivorous. A good thing, then, that their scantily-clad offspring was there with one of her more dangerous cosmetic items, to help Amy and Rory save the Doctor.
Author's Note: This was written for

Title: The Pillars of Creation
Author: [personal profile] kaffy_r
Fandom: Dr. Who
Characters: The Thirteenth Doctor, Yasmin Khan, Ryan Sinclair
Words: 1,792
Summary: They didn’t hold up the cosmos, of course, but Yaz thought they were a sign that the universe was good. She and the Thirteenth Doctor share some time, and thoughts about traditions of mystic beauty.
Author's Note: This was written, with affection, for
[personal profile] muccamukk , during the 2018 [community profile] fandom_stocking fun. She was interested in the Thirteenth Doctor and her companions, especially Yasmin Khan. I hope she likes this. NOTE: In deciding to imagine a facet of Yaz’s faith, I tried to tread carefully, and with respect, largely by keeping my comments as general as possible, while still referencing the tradition — which is not, as I understand it, a separate strain of the faith, but a practice and understanding of the faith that supersedes labels such as Sunni or Shia — known variously as Sufism or Tasawwuf. To any of my Whoniverse fans who are of the Muslim faith, please accept my apologies for any inaccuracies, or comments that lack that respect, and don’t hesitate to let me know; I’ll do my best to remedy those.

Title: A Falcon at Stoke Field
Author:

Fandom: Shadow of the Tower
Characters: Henry VII, Simnel the Pretender, two guards
Words: 926
Summary: One name had been left behind, the next was never his to begin with. In the aftermath of Stoke Field, Lambert Simnel chooses a new identity.
Author's note: This was written, with great affection, for
[personal profile] thisbluespirit for [community profile] fandom_stocking 2018. I thank her for luring me into yet another fandom, and with luck, this offering will be acceptable. My research is superficial at best, but the story's two central conceits lie in reports that the young pretender was called by the name he chose in some contemporary accounts (per Wikipedia at least) and that he eventually became a falconer.
Edited by: Unedited, but obsessively reread. Any mistakes are my own.

kaffy_r: A light-limned portrait of Donna Noble (Luminous Donna)
Much Delayed [community profile] fandom_stocking Review

Here it is, almost February, and I haven't thanked all the lovely people who filled my stocking this year (and by this year, I mean December-January, says pedantic
[personal profile] kaffy_r .) I loved everything, and was particularly tickled by the icons people made, and the recipes and recipe sites that people provided.

[personal profile] kingstoken gave me two lovely icons, one of Thirteen and one of Valkyrie, backed in a shade of my favorite color.

[personal profile] hopelesse gifted me with recs for some lovely fanvids. You should go over and check them out!

[personal profile] wendymypooh must have peeked into my food-loving brain, because she provided me with two candy recipes, and a comfort food recipe for chicken and dumplings. What a gift for cold winter days! Then, to top it off, she wrote me a Farscape fic, which may be the first time someone's written for me in one of my fave fandoms. It was wonderful, and any Farscape fans on my list would enjoy it, I'm sure.

[personal profile] tarlanx , from whose graphics skill I've benefited before, blessed me with a veritable cornucopia of .Sapphire and Steel icons. They're gorgeous.

[personal profile] thisbluespirit was wonderful, with two gifts; the first was her rec for Kitty Eden's Expressing the Inexpressible, and her link to her own wonderful tumblr lineup of Elements. Then she wrote a beautifully dense, witty, and sweet Sapphire and Steel fic, One Night Stand, for which I can't thank her enough; the story provides wonderful cameos for several Elements, interacting with Silver, my favorite Element.

[personal profile] highlander_ii provided me with four different cooking blogs, and I'm already making use of them; Alton Brown's is wonderful fun, and the Budget Bites blog has proven extremely helpful!

[personal profile] liadt remembered my love of narwhals and found me several absolutely gorgeous pieces of narwhal art, which made me squee.

[personal profile] hamsterwoman enriched my collection of The Goblin Emperor icons, and since I've dived into that tiny fandom with a great deal of joy (the book is my go-to comfort read), these beauties were most definitely welcomed.

[personal profile] alexcat noted my love for the MCU universe, and wrote a delightful bit of Cap/Sharon smut for me. I'm grinning just thinking about it.

[personal profile] falcon_horus gifted me with a most original stocking stuffer - two online puzzles. I love puzzles, so this was my jam.

To all of you - thanks from the bottom of my heart!
[community profile] fandom_stocking is a favorite time of year for me. both the giving and receiving, and your stocking stuffers gave me great joy.

Title: The Future in Dreams
Author:
[personal profile] kaffy_r
Fandom: Doctor Who/Torchwood
Characters: Jack Harkness, Alonzo Frame
Words:1,585
Summary: Jack knew what would happen. Alonso would miss him terribly at first, but someday he'd call Jack to introduce him to the new person he'd fallen in love with. And that was fine.
Author's note: This is a much delayed 2017
[community profile] fandom_stocking story written for [personal profile] trobadora . One of the characters she likes is Captain Jack Harkness, who happens to be one of my favorite Whoniverse characters as well. I've always wondered what happened after the Tenth Doctor brought Jack and Alonso together. I like to think that they'd have a great deal of time together, but with the reality of Jack's immortality, I can only hope the end of the relationship would be as positive as possible. I like to think the Tenth Doctor would have been happy with what happened, hoping to heal Jack just a bit. I also believe that, even years after Children of Earth, Jack would not be ready to consciously address every heartbreak that brought to him, hence at least one elision.

Author:

Fandom: The Goblin Emperor
Characters: Csevet Aisava, Aäno, Haru, Kevo, Pelchara, Maia Drazhar/Edrihasavar VII
Summary:Two years after Edrihasavar's ascension to the throne; Mer Csevet Aisava returns to Edonomee to help close an unhappy chapter of the emperor's life and, perhaps, open a better one for one of those left behind.
Words:3,043
Author's Note: Written for
[personal profile] hamsterwoman , during [community profile] fandom_stocking 2017. I have always wondered what Maia would have wanted for the tiny staff that served Edonomee during his time there, and which he left behind when he boarded the airship to the Untheileinese court. I choose to believe that he would have treated them as well as he could, especially once he had a year or two of rule under his belt, and that his affection for Aäno’s voice might have led him in this direction. I hope the recipient, and other readers, will forgive my naming of Kevo’s other daughter, Aäno’s sister. I could not find mention of her in the novel or its appendices.

We know so little about Elements that I have taken a liberty in describing Jet as having no set gender (hence “them” and “they”). I also took the liberty of allowing Jet, Iridium, and Radium the ability to work in the ocean and under several atmospheres’ worth of pressure. I have always been fascinated and frightened, in equal amounts, by the thought of the darkest depths of the ocean, especially the polar oceans; I’ve been equally fascinated by narwhals, and some of the stories about them. Author:

Characters:
Clara Oswald, Ashildr/Lady Me, Groot, Rocket, Gamora, Starlord
Summary:

Author's Note: Written for
[personal profile] juniperphoenix for the 2017 [community profile] fandom_stocking fun. Like me, she is interested in the ongoing adventures of Clara Oswald and the amazing woman known variously as Ashildr and Lady Me (or possibly Mie, if she likes to mix it up.) I hope that she likes this little story, written for the 2017 fandom_stocking fun, which sees Clara and Ashildr run into (and possibly afoul of) some unusual bounty hunters. I also hope that she forgives the slightly unusual crossover that provides the bounty hunters.
Edited by: No one. I did, however, obsessively read and re-read the story in an effort to ensure grammatical correctness. Any mistakes are purely my own, and will be corrected once pointed out. Note: Tante Rejsende is Google Danish for Aunt Traveler. I took the liberty of deciding that Clara and Ashildr would have decided on a name for their TARDIS fairly early on (especially since "TARDIS" was already taken), and since Ashildr was originally Norse - which could be Danish or Norwegian - the name gained a language. The pronunciation, again per Google, is "Tan-tuh, Riz-nyeh." I apologize to any Dane who knows how badly I've done on this.

Fandom Stocking Gifts

I've been MIA ever since New Year's, what with work stress, a back that went out just before Christmas, and again a couple of days ago - yay, always so much fun - but perhaps I can get back on the horse. A lot of you are doing the Fandom Snowflake challenge, and I've given thought to trying that out; late, perhaps, but fun? Some of you have been doing other memes, and all of them make me want to respond to your posts. But spoons - oh, spoons, where have you gone? I have no brain with which to post or comment ....

I did have a lovely
[community profile] fandom_stocking ; folks were very kind. Here's where you can find everything in my stocking

From
[personal profile] thisbluespirit , I got a beautiful little Sapphire and Steel (and Silver! Silver, FTW!) drabble; it played with light and dark in a way that pushes all my happy buttons. She always writes our favorite Elements so well!

[personal profile] maeve_of_winter took note of my Stranger Things love, and gave me a story about Hopper and Billy that was emotionally right on the money. Hurrah!

[personal profile] marginaliana gave me a sweet little forward rush of a ficlet, about Jack and River and Eleven - two of my favorite Whoniverse characters, and one of my favorite Doctors - that managed to make me want more of Jack and River's adventures.

[personal profile] weaselett wrote a fixit ficlet (say that three times fast) featuring Jack, Donna, and an off-stage Doctor who finally did the right thing. Yes, this is exactly what I needed.

[personal profile] liadt made me Eleven/River icons, and they will very soon go into my rotation because I love them.

Speaking of icons,
[personal profile] nrgburst satisfied my Black Widow love with some great gif icons (and she included Bruce, too, because Natasha/Bruce is close to my heart. More icons for rotation ....

Jack and River featured again, in a lovely graphic from
[personal profile] chamilet [personal profile] trobadora added to my Jack haul, with a graphic from Boom Town, which was one of the episodes that nurtured my OT3. Jack/Rose/Nine, FTW!

[personal profile] twinsarein brightened my stocking with one of her always sweet and sparkly holiday greetings.

[personal profile] hamsterwoman sent my stocking's cute factor rocketing up, thanks to her graphic of a Santa-hatted hamster. Yes, my voice went up several octaves into the "woman sees cute thing and squees about it" stratosphere.

[personal profile] pipilj gave me a lovely New Year's gif, plus a recipe that not only provides me directions for a good soup, but gave me the directions to make the stock necessary for the soup. And it has things that I love in it, like lemon grass, garlic, and ginger. MMMmm ... I was gifted with another recipe, for Jamaican rice and beans, from [personal profile] rosefox , who also noted my love of jazz, and gave me a recommendation for a great Ellington album. Since Ellington is one of my favorite classic jazz giants, this was much appreciated.

To all of you - thank you so much! Your gifts made my holiday season that much more wonderful, and I hope your own stockings were filled with similarly wonderful things. Happy 2018 to one and all!

Vacations and I Do Not Play Well Together. Not Even on Christmas

I mentioned to BB earlier tonight that I don't believe I've had a completely injury- or illness-free vacation in years. And, I said, it's got to be me at fault, not the vacations. (A bit like the nice boy who wonders why he picks so many mean girls who break up with him ... it's not them, buddy ....)

Blatherings under here )
I am a very silly woman. Then again, I am a silly woman in pain, whose closest relationship over the last 36 hours, other than with her beloved, has been with her heating pad.

Gah.

But the Christmas tree still looks beautiful. And my collection of TARDIS ornaments now stands at two, thanks to FB and Miss Em, and that's wonderful. So, pain or not, today has not been a total loss. Also, I've learned a lot about narwhals For Reasons, and that's also cool.

More Meanderings

I am now more than 1,400 words into the last chapter of Hearts & Moons. I may - just - complete the story within a decade! I've figured out what has to happen, and I'm maneuvering into place for the final action. I just want the chapter to be no more than 5,000 words.

I'm also starting to think about fandom_stocking, wondering if it will take place again this year. It's a huge thing for one person to wrangle, and I wouldn't be surprised if she decides not to take it on again this year, but I can hope. It's the one writing-a-thon event in which I take part, and even though I bitch and moan about how badly I'm doing at writing stocking stuffers or what-have-you, I love it.

A [community profile] fandom_stocking Apology

Folks, for the first time since 2011, when I fell in love with
[community profile] fandom_stocking - the only "-athon" I write for, and the one that has given me such joy - I am most probably not going to be able to fill anyone's stocking.

When I signed up myself, I was full of plans; I'd just finished the last two promised 2015 stocking stuffers, and I'd thought that had primed my creative pump. And, as I always do each season, I thought perhaps this was the year that I could focus on drabbles, or at least shorter stories. Plus, I had my vacation coming up, and I'd be able to write something every day ....

Yeah. Didn't happen. I can't even figure out definitively why, although last night I told BB it might be that finishing up those 2015 stories had, instead of priming the pump, run the well dry. God knows, this has been a terrible writing year for me; it's the first time since 2007 that I haven't been able to get at least one chapter of Hearts & Moons completed.

The events of November also have affected me, perhaps more deeply than even I thought.

Yesterday, the day before my vacation ended, I suddenly wrote two paragraphs of something, and I thought, "Aha! Adrenaline junkie time! You can at least get two stories done before my vacation, and perhaps a third one before the stockings go live ....

And then this morning, I burned my left index finger, ironing a shirt. It's bandaged up now, and doesn't hurt too much, but the bandage makes typing incredibly frustrating. I'm down from 80-plus words a minute to, I don't know, 30-40, what with having to fix up mistakes. GAAAAAAaarrrhh!

tl;dr - after burbling about
[community profile] fandom_stocking , and looking forward to it, I don't think I can take part. I don't say it can't happen. Anything can happen, of course, and one never shuts the door, but - and there's an end to the sentence.

Perhaps next year more of us can hang stockings, and I can fill all of them.

*sighs, heads off to the grocery store*

I. Am. On. Vacation.

Which should give me a chance to:

1. Decorate the tree that's been standing, nude, in our livingroom for the past two days. Late start, anyone?
2. Finish my holiday cards. I got 19 out this week and if I can get the same number done tomorrow, people will get them before ... uh ... New Year's? Maybe?
3. Tell the story of Andy's tale of woe - stolen guitar, smashed car window - which then turned into an honest-to-god Christmas tale of loveliness.
4. Wrap presents.
5. Cook a goose.
6. Write ALL THE FIC for
[community profile] fandom_stocking . (I have a stocking up myself, and here it is, but that's not quite as important as WRITING ALL THE FIC.)

More, later, after I've decompressed into holiday cheer. Oh, and a martini

ETA: Huh. I can't get through to LJ, ("Bad Gateway") and it's not cross-posting. Anyone else seeing those problems?.

Fandom: Sapphire and Steel
Characters: Sapphire, Silver, Steel
Words: 2,235
Summary: Bridges can be utilitarian or they can be beautiful. In either case, they allow people to cross obstacles and travel from one place to another - or, in the case of Elements, to break through hostile attacks of Time and rescue one of their own. Trust Silver to have an elegant touch ....
Author's note: Now, just as the 2016
[community profile] fandom_stocking fun is in full swing, I have finally made good on my 2015 [community profile] fandom_stocking IOU to [personal profile] liadt . I cannot begin to describe the chagrin with which I view my laggardly efforts.

Not Dead, Not Even Really Sleeping

It's just that I'm not doing much at all, or at least it seems that way.

In what I suppose I can call some sort of victory, I finally finished my 2015
[community profile] fandom_stocking stories.

You read that correctly. My 2015 stories. As
[community profile] fandom_stocking 2016 is well underway.

Sweet weeping god of fanfic on a rubber crutch.

Tomorrow, I have another endoscopy, to see if the infection I had in my throat has been taken care of. I'm going to head for bed, but first? I guess I'll upload that last 2015 story and alert its recipient. Who may well be bemused, amused, and confused.

Then it's on to this year!

Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: Jo Grant Jones, Martha Jones
Words: 3,339
Summary: For Jo Grant, The Year That Never Was started with a sorrowful flight up Brazil's Rio Negro, and continued with a year-long struggle to keep people alive. When she met Martha Jones and heard of her travels across the globe, she was driven to help.
Author's Note: This was written, with a great deal of affection, for
[personal profile] scripsi , in the 2015 [community profile] fandom_stocking fun. She admitted to a love of Jo Grant and the Master. While I didn't think I could do justice to Delgado!Master, I share her love of Jo, who is an underestimated Companion with a ready smile, a quick wit, and a spine of steel hidden underneath her gentle seeming. I thought about what Jo might have done during The Year That Never Was — a thought that dovetailed nicely with my musings on how Martha Jones might have made her way around the world. This story is the result.
Disclaimer: Much as I wish it were otherwise, nothing in the Whoniverse, save the occasional original character, is mine. All others belong to the BBC and their respective creators. I intend no copyright infringement and take no coin. I simply love them, and thank the BBC for letting me play in its sandbox.

This Is Not a Post

Really, folks. It isn't. It's more to say I'm alive, and that I actually intend to continue conversing with people on my last post - I'm not ignoring anyone, I just haven't had the intellectual vigor to follow up with a couple of folks.

It's not a post, because if it were a post, I'd have said Happy Birthday,
[personal profile] gerisullivan !! You're an amazing, creative, smiling, disciplined, fannish force of nature, and I'm very glad I know you! May the 2016-2017 year be a good for you, and may we see more of each other soon.

It's not a post, because I might say a whole bunch of things about the fire-struck oil-slick that is the RNC. I've been watching it at a remove, by following Twitter. I tried watching one of the early speeches and it raised my blood pressure enough to make me turn off the television.

It's not a post because every single day seems to unleash some awful bit of violence here and abroad - on top of the unending violence and despair in Syria and Iraq, in Somalia, in other places that are just as real as my home, against people who don't deserve it. And I don't have the spoons to consider it.

It's not a post, because it's too damned hot. And the old break in my foot aches from the mugginess. And I'm worried about Alex, the senior ginger partner of our feline triad. He's been throwing up almost every day. I removed any bit of milk from his diet (we used to give him a little bit of milk as a treat on a too-regular basis.) I'm hoping that will help.

It's not a post because - wait, I can say that I'm almost done one more IOU
[community profile] fandom_stocking fic. Yes! Something positive!

And now I'm going to bed.
