Ghibli Cleanses the Spiritual Palate

I suggested to Bob that we might get rid of some of our stress by turning to something that never fails to do us good; watch a Ghibli movie. Now all I have to do is decide which one to watch.

In the "Get a couple of things done each day" department, I vacuumed the bedroom, made a choclate-peanut butter cake and some sweet and sour red cabbage, and continued to enjoy a potato scallop dish with cheese that I
made a day or so ago.  (June Allyson must be smiling somewhere. Probably with Senator Hruska. I'd say "Look It Up, Children," but my Google-fu can't find the National Lampoon piece that, well, lampooned the two of them. NatLamp was generally as cruel as a bunch of snide, rich kids who were certain they were the smartest kids in the the room could be. But I digress. A lot. Never mind).

Back to Ghibli. We're going with "When Marnie was There."

A Couple of Things Make a List

1) It's snowing outside and, after I've had my first cup of coffee, dried my hair (just got out of the shower), and completed this post - whatever it may turn out to be - I have to gird my loins and wield my shovel at the snowflake horde. There are currently only two or three unit owners who undertake the job and I unwisely volunteered to be one of them. Ah well; it's a tad easier than wrestling with the lawn mower.

EDIT, as of Sunday evening; I went out and shoveled our courtyard and part of the sidewalk on one side of the building. I couldn't do as much as I wanted to, and later in the day the temperature rose just enough to melt the remaining ice and snow from the areas I'd tackled. But it doesn't erase the necessity of shoveling. And another unit owner came out and did some shoveling as well. I was reminded that we have one of our quarterly  unit owners' meetings tomorrow night. Not something I'm looking forward to, but again, something that needs to be done. Sigh. I guess I'd better read the minutes from the last meeting. Sigh, again.

Dune

We saw it in the theatre tonight; the first time in two years that we've seen a movie that wasn't on our television or computer screens.

I'm glad we did.  It was excellent.

It was also long, so I'm heading to bed now, but, yeah, if you have the ability to do so, go see it on the large screen. It's worth it.

Scattered Thoughts
  • If you and your spouse/significant other can build shelving units together without killing each other, yours is a relationship blessed to last. I know this is true.
  • If you and your spouse/significant other can have wildly divergent thoughts about The Green Knight, and still love each other, (me: a glorious masterpiece; BB: boring, repetitive pretension), the same applies.
  • If you can watch anime together, and agree on what's brilliant, what's good, what's trash and what's fun trash year after year after year, the same applies,

Lord of the Rings Binge

Saturday and Sunday, I finally gave in to my growing faunch for the three Jackson movies, and by growing, I mean I'd started thinking about watching the movies about 1.5 weeks ago, but kept telling myself that I shouldn't, because I'd be forcing Bob to watch as well, given how small our condo is. Finally, I couldn't wait any longer, and decided to try watching while he was asleep or otherwise engaged. I dragged out our DVDs of the extended versions of each movie, and settled in, starting around midday Saturday. I thank my ever-patient spouse for not rolling his eyes too hard; in fact, he watched most of "Fellowship" with me on Saturday, and a little bit of "Return of the King" last night.

I Do Indeed Exist

Although I haven't done much posting. I did manage to get another chapter of Hearts & Moons uploaded, and the next chapter is about 2/3rds done. (I'm not talking any more about "last chapter" because I don't want to be like the boy who cried wolf, which was what I was in danger of becoming. We shall see what happens over the next little while, and I shall endeavor not to jinx myself.)

Bob and I are largely recovered from what various doctors finally decided was the "bacterial flu." Whatever. If they couldn't figure out what it was, and if the blood tests didn't help the detective work, then by all means, call it what you will. We both ended up taking antibiotics. I really don't like taking them, firstly because I really don't want to be in absolute need of them somewhere down the road, only to learn that no antibiotic will work on me and, secondly, because antibiotics make everything taste weird and do unpleasant things to the necessary biota in one's body.

Still, much better, so hurrah for antibiotics.

I am into the third week with my new boss. I haven't killed him. Only 30 more months ....

Bob and I went to see "Black Panther" on Friday, and if you haven't gone to see it yet, try to make time for it. It's pretty much glorious. Next on my list: "A Wrinkle in Time."

Things I've Done Since I Last Posted

  • Gone to see Thor: Ragnarok last night with BB. Laughed and enjoyed myself quite a bit. Chris Hemsworth has a light comic touch (and so does Cate Blanchett as the villain, which was a pleasant surprise,) the writing was witty and light, the plot held together rather well for a superhero movie, and of course there was plenty of Hiddleston/Loki and a very funny Ruffalo/Hulk. Light, colorful, and very few "Blow up the universe! Loudly!" scenes. A perfect movie to take one's mind off of ... well, 2017 in general.
  • Dealt with another sick cat. Luckily, this is just a bad cold (both BB and I have experienced the delight of having Opie sneeze - wetly, and multiple times in one explosion - in our faces.)  We're giving him a med prescribed by the vet to keep him hungry, since he's lost some weight, at least partly because no one wants to eat when they have a cold. Luckily, he does eat the pill if it's in a pill pocket and then covered with mushy wet food. That's really good, because the one time we pilled him by hand, it was horrendous. He's big, and strong, and very squirrelly.
  • (Cancer kitty is doing quite well. Apart from becoming too fond of wet food. No more dry food for him, apparently. Heh.)
  • Done a little more on the final chapter of H&M. Losing hope of finishing it this year, but still working on it.
  • Watched the 2006 BBC Jane Eyre. Toby Stephens is far too pretty as Rochester (I actually liked George C. Scott as a good Rochester), but hey, Toby Stephens is pretty, so it was fun to watch. Ruth Wilson was excellent as Jane. It made me drag out my copy of Jane Eyre to read. God, Victorian literature is bloody wordy - but Charlotte Bronte manages to keep the story going.
  • Now I have to go and clean the place, because I have union folk coming over to do union stuff, and I don't want them to think I'm a slatternly housekeeper.

November Start

I haven't been very active online since my last Phil-oriented post. That's a combination of inertia and real life combining to make posting incredibly difficult to assay. I'll try to be more present this month, if not altogether voluble.

Just a few things to say (although I'm going to try to start collecting thoughts as they occur, for later posting.) And I'm going to try to comment on other peoples' posts as well. I can't continue to say that much of my social life is online, if I don't actually participate in that social life.

I honestly can't remember if I mentioned that I went to see "Bladerunner 2049" or not, but I did, and I urge anyone who can, to head out and view it now, before it disappears from theaters. Its ticket sales sputtered at the beginning of its run, so the powers that be may well take it out of the theaters early. I think it's pretty close to a masterpiece from all angles - acting, directing, pacing, plotting, thematic strength, everything. The one thing I can find to nitpick is the sound track, and then only the volume.

I've been slowly watching "Stranger Things 2" and I'm just as engrossed with it as I was with its first season.

And now I need to get to work, much as that is something I'd gladly avoid if I had the money to do so.

Friday

BB and I went to see "Spiderman: Homecoming" tonight. If you can get to see it, do so. It's the best superhero movie I've seen since, well, "The Avengers," and I loved all the other MCU movies, so that's saying a lot. It's funny — I haven't laughed out loud in a theater for quite some time — and smart, and has a villain who's both villainous and perfectly understandable, with a work ethic and a sense of responsibility to his staff and family. I found myself cheering him on in a couple of instances, a little to my surprise. Michael Keaton does villainy right. Tom Holland as a 15-year-old Peter Parker is so good that I can forget that he looks more like a 17-year-old kid. Sure, that's only two years' difference, but it's a difference. And that may be the only thing I can find to nitpick about.

I'm glad I went to the movie, but I'm still fighting the Black Dog. In my case, it's probably more of a Black Puppy, but he (or she, who can tell with these little demonettes?) keeps dashing out of the shadows and nipping at my emotional ankles. Fucking puppy.

So perhaps it's time to go to bed. I have another working weekend; helping clean out the condo storage basement, something I completely forgot until this morning, and then one of two separate union meetings, neither of which I want to go to, on Sunday morning.

Fucking puppy.

Oh, I said that already.

Down, boy.

I Saw "Arrival"

And it was pretty much magnificent. Dennis Villeneuve has created an amazing film based on Ted Chiang's novella "Story of Your Life." I have not read the story, but based on what I saw today, I'll be buying it soon.

It is elegant, intellectually clean, unsettling, and challenging. It is emotionally sonorous. It is beautiful. Amy Adams deserves so much praise for every minute change on her face and in her eyes. Every character, human or otherwise is treated with respect and, as a result, acts in ways that are understandable. The music is amazing, the message about humanity, language, love, and fear, and time, and more, are what you make of them.

If this doesn't win a ton of awards, I will be very disappointed.

Just A Thought on Fights on Film or Television

It seems to me that almost any fight, particularly comic-book fights, superhero fights, action film fights, would be shorter, less flashy, and more successful for whoever undertook the final move, if the person determined to win focused almost solely upon kneeing their opponent, hard, in the groin.

(I am reliably informed by those whose business it would be to be in the know that even wearing a cup is not necessarily proof against such a move, given that kicking, punching, or otherwise banging a cup hard enough would cause painful repercussions inside the cup.)

This might not work as well against a female opponent, I'll grant you. However, having landed on the cross-bar of what was once called a boy's bike more than once myself, and having experienced the breath-stopping impact of that, I'm willing to bet it mightn't be as ineffective against women as all that.

As you can imagine, this has lessened my appreciation of even the most gloriously choreographed fights I've witnessed on the big or small screen lately.

Captain America: Civil War

I'm waiting to see if my computer will successfully upgrade to Windows 10, so I'm hunting and pecking this out on the iPad. That means that this post won't be long or involved. Still, I wanted to say that my Mothers Day present was breakfast (real breakfast at a corner diner, not a "brunch") with BB, FB and Ms Emily, and then we saw "Captain America; Civil War."

First, a side trip, to New York Times movie reviewer A.O. Scott's (I'm sure he'd prefer being called a film reviewer. Suck it, Scott) review of CA:CW. It's here if you want to read it. I read it, and ....

I don't believe I've read such an aggressively condescending review in years. It's not just what he says, it's how he says it - the "Look I really, really want all of you to understand that I didn't want to see this film movie picture, but it's how I pay the rent, and now I'm going to go back and watch "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" for the billionth time to remind myself of what I really want to see."

Dude.

I get it, you're meant for the finer things in life. But really? Did you have to pour all that refined venom into the mix?

I mean, maybe he actually hates "Aguirre, the Wrath of God," so perhaps I'm being a little harsh on him ...

Still?

Duuude.

Then I realized what happened here. He didn't actually go see the movie I saw.

Well, that cleared that up.

Maybe tomorrow I'll have a better post about CA:CW, but for now I'll say I found it extremely well written, remarkably well paced, respectful of both its actors and its characters, and filled with very chewy ideas.

A Day in Which I Got Gin

That's really all I can title my day, or my post (why is it that I insist on titling my posts, I wonder?) For I did little more today than a) make my holiday card list, b) rewatch the Zygon Invasion and Inversion, and Face the Raven with my First Born, who'd specifically asked me to help him catch up with the season - and go out to get some meds, and some gin.

Note that I have, quite manfully, resisted making some sort of bad joke about meds and gin being sought on the same trip.

The Martian

(Warning; not a real review, just an immediate reaction.)

Went to see this movie tonight, and I have to echo what a lot of people have said - it's awesome. It's hard science fiction, with brain and heart, which means it does Campbell and Gernsback right, the way Campbell and Gernsback didn't, so ... without a lot of racism, sexism, etc., and with a great deal more literary and filmic sophistication than those two might ever have imagined - but still with a lot of true love for, and belief in, the power of logic, science, optimism, humanism and determination to move forward.

Or as hero botanist Mark Watney (portrayed wonderfully by Matt Damon) says, when presented with yet another life-threatening scenario, "I've got to science the shit out of this." And he does, while a totally admirable group of science heroes back on earth do their damnedest to help him out (not always successfully.)

The look and feel of it was gorgeous; I felt like we were looking at Mars, even as I knew that we weren't.

If this doesn't win the Hugo for best long form drama (or whatever the hell they call it next year), I'll either cry foul, or prepare myself to see the film of a lifetime if the winner actually tops The Martian.

Mad Max: Fury Road

I forgot to mention that we watched this movie Sunday night and were really impressed with it. I'd heard so many people be impressed with it, and wanted the chance to see if it lived up to the hype. At least in my opinion, it most definitely did.

I usually judge the worth of movies on the strength of their acting - I have little intellectual understanding of what makes for the quality of a movie's visual or thematic aspects, so I tend to leave that for those who are more at ease with them - and I was very impressed with the acting; so much done, as other reviewers have said, with the eyes, with small gestures, and all of those subtleties were successfully planted in the middle of motion, action, explosion, none of which is pointless and all of which is almost balletic.

And that motion was paired with incredible music, gorgeous color palettes, wonderful bits of world building and myth making; it was an altogether gorgeous and emotionally moving film.

tl;dr: I liked it.

It's been a few days since I last did anything but check desultorily on other folks' posts (oh, and post Chapter 22 of Hearts & Moons, which small victory I still feel I must trumpet, or at least flute.) When it came to other things, life kept getting in the way.  But at the end of this very long week, of which more, anon, I think I finally have the spoons to do some sort of catch-up.

First, thanks to everyone who commented on my entry to the spoken word meme fun. I had a lot of fun with it. And finally, please, consider helping this Kickstarter campaignCrossed Genres is the kind of magazine I wish I'd been able to read back when the type of SF&F magazines ran the vast, diverse gamut from Analog to Isaac Asimov's. It champions diversity, it looks for quality writing, it's worth it. There are only three days to go on its campaign, and as I write this, they are about $3,400 away from their goal. There are a lot of good causes out there, and when you have a limited amount of money to give, the arts often have to give way to more immediate life-saving charities. But the arts save lives, too, so if you have an extra $5 or $10, think about helping this campaign beat the deadline.

Got back to word of four major contract negotiation sessions scheduled for next week. Again, keep your fingers crossed.

Enjoyed Agents of SHIELD again last night; not quite as good as last week's, but set some intriguing plot points up. Ward became more human, and Ming Na and Clark Gregg rocked it.

I donated to Philippine Typhoon relief and I hope folks who can will do so also. There are a lot of good groups out there: the International Red Cross, Mercy Corps, Doctors Without Borders, to name just a few. Does anyone know if there are Dreamwidth or LJ fundraising efforts extant?

And finally, I'd meant to mention this a couple of weeks back. It's word of a film by Saudi filmmaker Haifaa Al-Mansour, one I'd love to see. The difficulties she dealt with to make the film are pointed reminders of every damned thing wrong with considering women a different species - and the film appears to be a joyous reminder that the different species insists on being human. Imagine that.

What I Managed to Do On My Weekend

After being completely incapable of writing, and certain that I'd post a gigantic goose-egg for [community profile] fandom_stocking, I eventually managed to write seven pieces, for about 7,600 words' worth. I write so slowly these days, and it seems to be so very much harder for me than it used to be,(holy crap, I'm jealous of folks who can bang it out, and do magnificent jobs doing so) but eventually that weird and unexplainable thing that happens somewhere in my brain to allow me to write actually happened. I am reasonably happy with the results. At least one was in a new fandom for me, and I'm hoping the results meet with favor.

I also went to a movie tonight, and I'm glad I did. I watched The Hobbit, and I deem it Very, Very Good. Good enough that it makes me want to reread The Silmarillion and not The Hobbit. Jackson did what I hoped he would, and made the dwarves of Middle Earth believable and filled with honor. It's a lesson he hadn't quite learned with Rhys-Davies and Gimli, son of Gloin. In fact, I think he did what I'd hoped for in general. I'm looking forward to the second movie. Is it out yet?

(I'd probably have more to say, but I'm dead beat, and am going to bed. Tomorrow's going to be a bear, I just know it.)

kaffy_r: A typical day in the BSG!verse (Frakkin' Watchtower)
So. The Avengers.

Tomorrow is my first day back from vacation, and I know the week is going to be a bear (not as much of a bear as it would have been, had certain folk at work gone above and beyond to make sure I get paid this Friday despite forgetting to put in my time card when I got back from Canada, which is another story). I plan to celebrate making it to this coming Friday by going back to see The Avengers in a movie theater.

Because, oh my goodness, I like that movie!

There were so many reasons I loved it, not the least of which were:

Natasha! Ms Romanov was smart, scared, brave, dangerous, human, cunning, caring, ruthless, and as far as I'm concerned, the most-rounded member of the team and of the cast. I understand that there's a lot of Scarlett Johansson dislike out there. I do not share it. I also know there are folks who are ambivalent about how Joss Whedon views or writes females. I can't speak to that because I know him largely from Firefly, Dr. Horrible and some of the early Buffy - not nearly enough by which to judge. But at least in terms of how he and  fellow writer Zak Penn handled the Black Widow, I'd have to say he did an outstanding job.

Here there be potential, little, and Great Big Ol' spoilers. You've been warned. )

The dialogue was just as fast, intelligent, and witty as others have reported it. The pacing worked well. And the story made more sense than it had a right to, although I'm willing to bet that my comic book sensibilities helped make it so.

And yes, after I saw it the first time, I told BB that I could see myself writing fic for the Avengers. It's the first time I've ever been interested in writing outside of the Whoniverse (with the exception of one June-centric White Collar idea). I probably won't, but obviously there's something in the movie - the relationships, the team-building - that pushed a button. So I've been reading some other people's Avengers fic, mostly via recs from[personal profile] selenak ; so far, I'm looking for especially liking Natasha and Clint oriented stories, but there are a lot of good stories focusing on the other characters as well.

So, yeah, I'm going to see it again. And I'm going to try very hard - very hard - not to get tangled up in another fandom. I really don't need it.

P.S. Two Avengers recs of my own: we were emergencies by [personal profile] gyzym  is subtle, dense, emotionally draining, and made me believe whole-heartedly in Clint and Natasha as people, friends, lovers and dysfunctionally awesome heroes. It's also extraordinarily erotic; explicit, but totally integrated and necessary to the story. Wardrobe Malfunction, or, Passing the Bok, by[personal profile] spiderine  (here on lj and here on dw) made me laugh because it's a pointy little stick, wielded with wit by the author and poked in the eye of female-diminutive marketing.

Yes, I'm aware that's not quite a word. Heading to see the movie anyhow. By myself, as it happens (which doesn't bother me, since I rather imagined BB would not be interested.) But it's sort of on a whim, and it's definitely the first time in a long time that I've attended a movie by myself. This should be interesting. All the popcorn for myself. MMMmmmm/

Possibly a review afterward; my fingers and hands are tired, though, after a lot of typing today. We shall see.

I Had So Many Things To Say

But I couldn't find the time or the inclination. It's been one of those days weeks months ah, fuggit, one of those periods of times.

Still, a few things make a post, don't they? Let's see.

Birthdays! There are, and were, birthdays!

Many past happy returns of the now-bygone day to[personal profile] james_davis_nicoll (18th May), who almost single-handedly keeps me informed and amused about a plethora of fannish and general things. His cats, too; my world would be a little less richly wonky without James' cats, and his occasional contretemps with brassy squirrels.

Happy birthday, too, to [personal profile] robling_t (just yesterday, 26th March); may your Muse be beneficient this year, and may life be good to you.

Nor can I forget to wish all the best in the coming year to [livejournal.com profile] mostlikely2 (22nd March), one of the people still most apt to challenge the way I think, and one of the writers who can move me to tears of joy.

Other Things!

Yes, other link-heavy things! )
kaffy_r: Still from Arakawa Under the Bridge (Arakawa afternoon)
Sun and Sedentary Pleasures

I got up today, and didn't get out of my jammies until First Born came to visit around 2 p.m. And I didn't really feel guilty; the sun was shining through the south windows, the cats were generally happy, and the only fly in the ointment was BB having to deal with a low level cold. My mother called and we had a lovely chat, my brother later called and we had a brief chat as well. In between, BB, FB and I caught up with each other.

(The poor lamb is dead tired; ever since returning from London, he's been involved in a play where the director has, for reasons known only to god and the devil, decided on a seven-day-a-week rehearsal schedule. So it's been up at 6, work until 6, go directly to rehearsal, get home at 11 and to sleep at midnight, wash, rinse, repeat. On paper, it doesn't sound too bad for a month and a half. In reality, he's got bags under his eyes and he looks exhausted. But the play starts Thursday, so there's an end to it - although he promptly signed up to do a teeny-tiny bit with Red Moon Theater as a one-off. It's good to see him reviving his theater work, but ... health, my son, health!)

And of course, all the while, I sat here at the 'puter and perused the world beyond the screen, which always makes me happy. Now, if I could just get back on the fic horse. The beast is here, and in the corral, and happy to see me. I believe it's even saddled. I just have to get the step-stool and clamber on.

While I'm rambling about next to nothing ... you may be breathless with excitement to learn that BB and I watched Cowboys and Aliens last night. It was great and good fun, totally illogical, and, as BB pointed out, very Spielbergian, despite being Jon Favreau's baby.
  • Kid? Check.
  • Dog? Check.
  • Kid and dog in danger? Check.
  • Enigmatically good preacher? Oh, definitely, check. (Clancy! Brown!)
  • Bad guy turned hero for no reason than because the script says so and the actor's good enough to pull it off? Check.
  • Rotten secondary main character (Ford's wonderfully scenery chewing Colonel Dolarhyde) who is turned into a relative cream puff by coming into close proximity to aforementioned kid? Check.
  • Completely unworkable and illogical aliens, both good and bad? Check, and check.
  • Merciless, theivin', smelly, sneaky, cowardly, murderous outlaws and snivelling brat of a bully (Dolarhyde's son, Percy) turned into better people by the end of the movie, courtesy of fightin' said eeeevil aliens along side native Americans right out of central casting, all singing and drinking together in Doc's (yes, Doc's. Oh, the cliches, and oh, how I loved them)? Check, and again, check.
So, yeah, what a completely sugary piece of forgettability. But it made me smile. Perhaps in part because Daniel Craig was wonderful eye-candy His eyes. They're so ... blue. He holds himself with a stillness that stays with you, even in a piece of ephemera like this.

And finally we come to the birthday wishes:

To [livejournal.com profile] jessalrynn, (25th Feb.) many happy returns of the day. May all the rough spots be smoothed out, may the vicissitudes of money and muse and family and life in general transform themselves into good things for you in the coming year!

To [livejournal.com profile] maruad, (25th Feb.), may the coming year be artistically fertile and may we continue to enjoy your often wise and witty comments here online. You are always a pleasure!

And finally, to [personal profile] rosa_acicularis , (26th Feb.) Happy Birthday tomorrow, to someone I always love to read, whether it's fic or commentary.

And it turned out that she was able to show me, again online, a Sharktopus* tee-shirt. Well! I made sounds of yearning because - Sharktopus!!! - little thinking that my idle yearning might be satisfied.

[livejournal.com profile] lyricalviolet, however, is, as I believe I have mentioned, awesomesauce. And less than two weeks later, my very own Sharktopus tee-shirt arrived by UPS.

All my munificent friend asked in return was that I post a picture of myself, wearing said Sharktopus tee, and it's my extreme pleasure to do so now.  (Also, note the hat - that's my birthday hat from BB, because he, too, is awesomesauce, as I believe I have, upon previous occasions, mentioned.)
