Gerry and Carter

When we sent Opie over the bridge on April 14, he was the last of our long-time cats. I said the next day I didn't know if I could foresee getting another cat, at least not immediately. Over the following weeks, I actually liked being able to put the cat food dishes away, and have a kitchen free of them and the covered litter box (don't judge; we have a small condo, and it's the only place we can put it. Sixteen years of experience has shown us it can work and not be disgusting). I liked not having to watch my feet when I got up, or check for cat vomit, or pick up furballs, or anything having to do with cats, frankly. When Bob mentioned the possibility to me a couple of weeks later, I just looked at him, and he shut up.

And then somehow both of us were checking various adoption agencies' websites, looking to see when they were going to be open for adoptions again.

One of them is just a block from us in Far North Rogers Park. And somehow, once again, we went up the day they reopened for adoptions and checked out a bunch of cats.

About a week and a half later, we welcomed Gerry and Carter to Casa Kathbob. They are about five years old, are bonded although they're not sibs, and - kind of important - they've never been outside the shelter. Carter, the ginger and white boy, was born either there or at another shelter, and Gerry, the black and white tuxie, was still a kitten when he arrived there.

It's been an interesting process. For one thing, it's pretty clear the lady who runs the shelter loves these two and, given her druthers, would have kept them. But it's also clear that she knew getting them homes was the best thing to do for them.

The dichotomy has led to her being ... shall we say ... rather more willing to insert herself into our daily life than we'd like. We had to buy the expensive cat food she feeds them, we had to buy the expensive cat litter she uses for them, she bought and gave us loads of toys for both of them, she wants us to put screens in our windows so they can have fresh air, she''s checked on them almost daily either by text or phone  - I just got off the phone with her..- yeah, a bit intense. We're bearing with it because the contract we signed gives her the right to do that for about two or three weeks, and ... whatever. We want to extricate ourselves from her without her having to worry about the cats. .

Once that happens, we'll see if we can gradually introduce them to the healthy but less expensive food we've used, and we want to see if we can wean them off the litter they've been used to, and introduce them to the litter we've used for years. We may not be successful. If not, we can live with what they're used to, but I hope we can make the changes. Especially with the litter - god, I hate clumping litter; it's nauseating.

But none of that matters in the end. We have two new kitties, and we think they're going to fit in. They've been sleeping with us fairly regularly, even the first night, and although they don't like being picked up, they are definitely happy to be petted and cooed at. Carter was originally named Cotter, but Bob always hated "Welcome Back Kotter," so it's been amended to John Carter of Mrrp. Gerry was originally Jerry Garcia, but neither of us are fans of the Grateful Dead, so he's now named in honor of my late beloved union mentor Gerry Minkkinen.

We have to take Gerry in on July 7th to check on a growth in his throat, which the shelter didn't know about. Til then, his nickname is Mr. Sniffles; with any luck, the growth can be easily removed or otherwise dealt with. Carter is the dopiest cat I've seen in a long time - very flat head with ears and nose so big they make his eyes look tiny. I hate to say that I've got a favorite this early in the game but ... yeah, I kind of do.

Here they are: Carter looks almost handsome. Heh.

Notes From Opie Land

Over the last three days, I've discovered that Opie, our 14-year-old ginger kitty loves Marmite. I mean, he looooves Marmite. I discovered this while I was indulging my own love of the stuff (WHAT??!?) over the weekend.

He came up to where I was seated on the livingroom couch and began sniffing at my Marmite-smeared saltine crackers (WHAT!?!??) with the kind of obsessive focus he normally reserves for ... well, he doesn't normally have much obsessive focus for human food. Or he didn't until now. I put some on my fingers, which he proceeded to lick clean. Then he attempted to bite one of the fingers. This didn't go over well with The Producer of Wonderful Brown Pasty Stuff, so he was placed on the floor. Later, however, I decided that Marmite might be one way to get medications into him if absolutely necessary, I told Bob about this. Bob is not a fan of Marmite. Nope. Not a fan. He just looked as if he couldn't figure out who to side-eye more, me or Opie. In the end, I think we both got a serious dose.

Then yesterday, when I was enjoying some Marmite-free saltine crackers (WHA - oh, never mind.) Opie came up to me, sniffed at the cracker in my hand - then tried to wrestle it from me by biting into a large portion of it. This had the effect of scattering an explosion of saltine cracker across me and the livingroom table, but he was able, with a little help from me, to actually swallow some not-inconsequentially-sized morsels of cracker.

Opie is a weird ass little cat.

Welp ....

The day started around 4:30 a.m., with our elderly cat, Opie, showing the messy and smelly signs that a recurrent problem with the lowest portion of his lower GI tract had reoccurred. To avoid TMI, I'll simply say that carpet cleaner and repeated laundry loads vied with our sympathy for our unhappy cat, a little fellow who was obviously in pain.

Off he went to the vet's, where he received a steroid shot, which works to cut swelling in the lower GI tract and, thus, help cut discomfort and other assorted problems.

In the past, these shots have had the requisite effect in a matter of 2-3 hours. This time he is still dealing with obvious discomfort as we hit 9 p.m. The vet said we shoud wait for a day, since that time period is a normal period for steroid shots to take effect. So we will wait, but I worry that a formerly effective treatment is becoming less effectve and, as a result, our little cat is in pain longer.

Later this afternoon, we managed to misplace our postbox key. Within a very few minutes, too; I had it in my hand, put it down - and now it is gone, presumably to the same pocket universe that swallowed BB's  passport. This will require a visit to the post office, and more bureaucracy before we can get into our small post box.

As I said ... welp ....

The lady who wants to meet Vincent emailed me to say she can't come today, but can do so tomorrow. That's fine, but ... yeah, would have preferred it today. Especially since Vincent last night discovered our bedroom door's cat door, which allowed him to come in at night and frighten the hell out of Opie by trying to jump on the bed. Prior to last night, he hadn't grasped the concept of the cat door. And when I put the cover on it, he figured out how to get it off. He's clever, I'll give him that.

Ah, well; tomorrow it is, and that gives me the chance to clean up around here.

Quiche In the Oven

The crust is awful and patchwork, because I can't roll out a crust to save my soul, especially when it's recently thawed pie dough, but the quiche itself is going to be pretty decent, I think. And I managed to clean up the kitchen (more or less; I'm going to get BB to clean the frying pan in which I tried the bacon), and I'll be setting the table soon. This is all good. especially since I spent a lot of the day driving to get groceries, or laying low because of a headache that seems to want to become something more.

Poor BB is fighting some ailment of his own, and I very much hope to at least cosset him with dinner. And then, I'll settle down with a new drink I learned how to make yesterday; gin in a martini glass that's been coated with four dashes of bitters. Last night I made it with orange bitters, although it's supposed to be made with angostura. Tonight, I'm going to try two mini-drinks, one with the proper recipe and one with the orange bitters, to see which I think is better.

I had one of my acrylic nails peel off today. It's the first time that has ever happened, and my finger looks naked without a nail. I'm calling the nail salon tomorrow (they're open on Sundays) to see if I can get in.

Also in the "First World Pampering" category, we've made an appointment with a new groomer for Vincent. He doesn't know it yet. but he's going to get a bath, de-matted properly, and be gifted with at least a modified lion cut to prevent more matting. I'm sure he'll be very excited.

Yesterday, there was a mass shooting in Aurora, IL, not far from Chicago. A man who'd just been fired from his job, and who had a history of violence, domestic and otherwise, who'd had his FOID card revoked, but who still had a gun, left the building and came back and killed five people. He's dead. too. Six sets of parents and kids, six mothers, sisters, wives. all with gaping. bleeding holes in their souls. Because someone had easy access to guns. Another day in America.

Fuck the NRA and fuck the culture it has nurtured.

What We Did on Valentine's Day

1. Took an extremely constipated ginger cat to the vet.
2. Cleaned the carpet, bed, blankets, etc. to the best of our ability thereafter (because constipation in cats comes with liquid matter that squirts out around the blockage as kitty attempts to expel it and yes that is indeed TMI, but hey, you've read this far and we're past it.)
3. Did three smallish but smelly loads of laundry as part of the cleanup.
4. Cleaned another section of rug that I discovered our other cat had, sometime in the past two weeks, used at least once, as a secondary litter box. Two applications of baking soda and vacuuming have made it better. Unfortunately, the location included some extremely important audio/visual wiring. I'm amazed none of it went out. The wiring has been very carefully wiped down with Lysol. Fortunately, the area hasn't been used as a loo recently, so I assume it got used prior to our installation of the new litter-loo. Go, us.
5. Ruminated unhappily on our vet's comment that changing dry food to wet probably wouldn't help minimize constipation and its concomitant problems, because cats who eat wet food drink less, which defeats the purpose of switching the food types. Sigh.
6. Fought headaches all day.
7.
Made our bed up with fresh linens
8. Had some whisky
9. Loved the fact that BB and I got through this and were able to make jokes occasionally. Go, team kaffyrbb!

Updates Are Us

I can't believe how long it's been since I actually posted something, or responded to other folks. Here's my "n things makes a list" post.

1. Vincent is settling in, and Opie, while continuing to growl, seems to be getting used to him. I was saddened when I saw Vincent awaken to the fact that "this other little ginger guy actually doesn't like me! Why?" but I'm hoping that they'll eventually get comfortable with each other. We got a new cat litter pan, or more accurately, a "litter loo" that is essentially a mini-shed for holding the real litter pan. It's taller than our old Booda-box, which allows Vincent to get in, turn around, etc., without getting his fur into the litter or his own leavings (and that is still a big problem; I can hardly wait for his Feb. 2 grooming date, during which he'll have the fur around his butt trimmed. Cleaning a very big cat's behind is an exercise for two people, and it's tough to do well even with two.) The litter loo has the added benefit of being a small table, providing another horizontal surface in a kitchen that needs them.

2. Last Saturday, I attended a Pioneer Press reunion-cum-goodbye-for-the-buyouts-and-earlier-laid-offs party. It was one of the most surprisingly positive, and positively intense, gatherings I've recently been to. Somewhere between 30 and 50 people attended, nearly all of them Pioneer alumni of various types. I saw people I hadn't seen in decades; I saw three of my old editors, including one who I'd served under in the late 1980s; she told me that seeing me and my colleagues was the only reason she'd braved the weather that night (it was pretty bad.) I didn't even mind seeing my last editor; he might have been what tipped me over into taking the buyout, but I realized that I could interact with him pretty darned pleasantly when we weren't forced to interact on a professional basis. There were loads of hugs, freely and enthusiastically given and received. One of my buyout colleagues said, .as we headed home, that it was very much like a high school reunion; you realize that even the people you hated or feared as a high school student have turned into people you are happy to see.

3. A couple of nights ago, I was feeling kind of down - can't even remember why - and my beloved husband put on the first episode of "The War Games," the final adventure for the Second Doctor. We binged the entire adventure over two nights, and it was rollicking good fun. The pacing was remarkably decent, and I was surprised at how much action there was, since I think the received wisdom is that it was the Third Doctor who was action-oriented, and not the Second. The acting varied from "a bit better than decent" to "OMG this is horrible, and it's viewable only as scenery-chewing OTT fun!" The fellow playing the War Chief was marginally better than the guy playing the security chief, and the War Lord was actually pretty good. It was my first encounter with Jamie and Zoe; both actors did well, especially Frazier Hines. Of course, it doesn't do to inspect the plot too closely, lest one break out into snickers and, eventually, guffaws. But I'm so glad I saw it.

4. We in Chicago are bracing for the coldest week thus far this 2018-2019 winter season. By Wednesday, the high temp. for the day will be -10F, and the wind will put daytime wind-chills close to -25. The night time temps and windchills for Tuesday and Wednesday are even more dire. I therefore went out today and got all the necessary things we'll need; Japanese fish cake, bean sprouts, seitan, fried tofu, Japanese and Korean baked goods, mochi, curry and mapo tofu mix ... WHAT??!?

5. Also? Roger Stone was arrested and indicted. The world got a little brighter ....

Birthdays. Birthdays and Cats

Monday was
[personal profile] ljgeoff 's birthday, and I can't begin to tell you how much she deserves all the birthday wishes. And, frankly, All The Things.

She's got more energy in her little finger than I've ever had in my entire body. She also has a heart that puts the "His Heart Grew Three Sizes That Day" Grinch to shame. Put simply, she cares; for people, for animals. for strays, for anyone or anything that needs love.  Her intelligence just adds to the package.

Then, when you further add to that her amazing writing talent, bringing excellent fanfic into the world, as well as original fiction of haunting power, you've got a creative dynamo with a cheerful mien, and a fearless ability to leap into abysses of all kinds, either crossing them in one bound, or rebounding from the bottom to climb determinedly to the top.

Many delayed Happy Birthday wishes, Lisa - and here's a picture of Vincent. (Under the cut because of size.)
Vincent Routliffe, the Big Grey Cat )He's settled in quite nicely, and Opie is adjusting a little faster than we'd feared he would. We still have to tackle a couple of issues, including some remaining mats, but the vet says his knackering proceeded nicely. He's really lovely, and I'm glad he's with us. (Also, it's weird, but he has absolutely no guard hairs, only the soft under coat, which accounts for the matting propensity. It's the exact opposite of our gingers, who had and have so much top/guard hair that it was and is hard to get to the under coat.)

Various Things Make a List

1. There are several people out there who have had recent birthdays. and if I have any brainpower left over the next 24 hours, I'll wish them proper natal salutations.
2. My company is once again planning its traditional pre-holiday layoffs. This year they come with potential buyouts. I am talking seriously with Bob about whether this is a possibility for me - as in, how desperately poor can we be and still keep the condo, and afford medications. The talk will have to be done quickly, since people have to put in for buyout consideration in less than a week. My company ... swear to god ....
3. Our remaining kitty, Opie, is driving us spare with constant vocalization. but we know it's because he's desperately lonely. We''ll be looking at the idea of finding him a new buddy sometime very soon.
4. Stan Lee has died.He had many faults, and his death wasn't unexpected but I'm still sad, because I
fell in love with comics as a kid, with Fantastic Four's fight with Dragon Man.
5. Today is Veterans Day in the U.S. I grew up with Remembrance Day in Canada, and the relative diminution of the commemoration down here still bothers me somewhat.

So the cancer has returned in our little black cat. Bob found two lumps along his throat, that popped up seemingly overnight, and he's been lethargic for the last week or so. Took him in to the vet. She did a needle biopsy, looked at it, and apparently told Bob that there was no need to send it to the lab. Bob said she used the word "aggressive" and I guess it won't be long. When he seems to be in bad discomfort or pain, we'll call for the same vet that eased Alex across the bridge to come.

Last September, the diagnoses we got was such that we were expecting only two to five more months with him. We got so much more than that, so I should feel grateful. We'd actually started wondering if the initial operation, to take the tumor out of his ear, had been more successful than the team told us it was. I guess not. Still, a few extra months with our most excellent pussycat. I need to remember that.

What a day. What a fucking day.

I haven't posted at all for a few days, and only once during the Labor Day weekend, which was probably a terrible use of my labor-less time, but I plead stress on all counts, your honors.

I've been fighting back spasms and general pain for the last five days, and for some reason it has refused to go away. I've gone back to my exercises (did I mention this in my last post?) and have taken many, many trips to our tiny bathtub jacuzzi, but the usual cycle of the pain going away doesn't seem to be repeating properly. We'll see if the weekend helps.

We'll be flying out to Seattle with Tommy and Lily, Andy's and Em's cats, on Friday night, and will stay there until Tuesday. I'll have five days to completely rest, so I'm hoping that will help lay the back pain to rest, if I haven't gotten it properly under control by then.

This isn't much of a post, I know, but I wanted to keep an oar in. I'll try to respond to other people's posts (I hope) tonight.

Getting Things Done

In less than a week, Andy and Emily will take off for their eight-day trip, u-haul trailer and all, to Seattle. They're in the last crazy days of packing, always in need of more boxes, and terribly behind. Which is absolutely normal for moving, but I feel for them. If I have any evening time this week, I'll go over and offer what help I may.

I've determined that I have another week of vacation available to take this year, and I'm going to ask to be cleared to take it the third week of September. That will allow Bob and me (wow - that's grammatical, but sounds weird) to fly out to Seattle, with their cats, Tommy and Lily. We'll be babysitting the cats while they drive out and get settled into their new place. Thank god, they found a place they could afford, 20 minutes outside the city. Emily has found a couple of part-time nanny gigs that she can handle on top of her classes, and Andy, who hasn't yet found a job in his field, says he'll Uber until he can. With GPS, one doesn't have to be familiar with where one's driving, I suppose.

Argh. I'm worried.

Today, we got rid of some medical records and such that go back mostly to 2014, but a few that go back to 2010. None of them are necessary at this point. It allows us to clear out a section of the office which we've sort of planned to make the visiting kitties' space - we have a cat tree, so the old cat tree, which Bob was able to cut down by one level* has been moved in there for the micro-cats (they're full grown and still only half the size of Phil and Opie.) That's where their litter box will be as well, oh joy. Still, it's only for two weeks.

I got my hair cut, and I'm about to take a shower to get ready for karaoke shenanigans. Why karaoke, you ask?

Because tonight, we're invited to a goodbye party thrown by some of their close friends. It's at a favorite bar of theirs, where, I am reliably told by my first born, There Will Be Blood Karaoke. The party doesn't start until 9 o'clock, which strikes me as altogether too late to get started on partying of any kind. That undoubtedly marks me as a feeble oldster, to which I willingly cop. Ah, well; that we're invited is a mark of ... I don't know - respect? Andy definitely wanted us there.

Cats Go to Heaven

One of the three little kittens born over the weekend at Tiny Kittens in Langley, B.C., died this afternoon of complications caused by a congenital heart defect. Tesla was her name, and no one had thought she had a problem. It was her sister, Allie, who everyone worried about. As everyone on the Tiny Kittens Youtube Channel chat agreed, at least she was warm, well fed, and loved for the very short time she was here.

This has happened before. Even in the short time I've been obsessively watching all the kittens on TK's channel, I saw two mothers lose two kittens each, again after just a couple of days of life. None of these kittens are mine, and yet my afternoon was dampened when I saw the news. Poor little thing. This mom, Princess Consuela, is taking good care of her remaining two, Allie and Bentley; I hope she doesn't lose any more.

It reminds me a) that life isn't fair for kittens, even the ones who are beloved (as Tesla was for her short time here) and cared for, which makes the lives of feral cats even more sad for me to consider, and b) sometimes you have to take comfort where you can when considering these little ones.

Things I've Done Since I Last Posted

  • Gone to see Thor: Ragnarok last night with BB. Laughed and enjoyed myself quite a bit. Chris Hemsworth has a light comic touch (and so does Cate Blanchett as the villain, which was a pleasant surprise,) the writing was witty and light, the plot held together rather well for a superhero movie, and of course there was plenty of Hiddleston/Loki and a very funny Ruffalo/Hulk. Light, colorful, and very few "Blow up the universe! Loudly!" scenes. A perfect movie to take one's mind off of ... well, 2017 in general.
  • Dealt with another sick cat. Luckily, this is just a bad cold (both BB and I have experienced the delight of having Opie sneeze - wetly, and multiple times in one explosion - in our faces.)  We're giving him a med prescribed by the vet to keep him hungry, since he's lost some weight, at least partly because no one wants to eat when they have a cold. Luckily, he does eat the pill if it's in a pill pocket and then covered with mushy wet food. That's really good, because the one time we pilled him by hand, it was horrendous. He's big, and strong, and very squirrelly.
  • (Cancer kitty is doing quite well. Apart from becoming too fond of wet food. No more dry food for him, apparently. Heh.)
  • Done a little more on the final chapter of H&M. Losing hope of finishing it this year, but still working on it.
  • Watched the 2006 BBC Jane Eyre. Toby Stephens is far too pretty as Rochester (I actually liked George C. Scott as a good Rochester), but hey, Toby Stephens is pretty, so it was fun to watch. Ruth Wilson was excellent as Jane. It made me drag out my copy of Jane Eyre to read. God, Victorian literature is bloody wordy - but Charlotte Bronte manages to keep the story going.
  • Now I have to go and clean the place, because I have union folk coming over to do union stuff, and I don't want them to think I'm a slatternly housekeeper.
