Also, I'm putting the MV here (under a cut, I'm not subjecting folks to it if they don't want to see it), so that if you do want to read it, you have the MV there as proof of what sparked this ridiculousness creativity.

Proof of Life

It's been a minute, so I decided to touch down for at least half of another minute.

In brief: before I even got past the third Dr. Who, and despite doing my damnedest to avoid any spoilers, I read the wrong headline *shakes fist at The Guardian*, so I'm avoiding actually watching the remaining episodes until I can bear to watch them. That's not logical in the least, but there you go.

Acting on advice from
[personal profile] lilacsigil , I adjusted my AO3 Stray Kids fanfic's fandom tag, taking it out of SKZ fandom and tagging it as part of music video fandom. I also cut my note so that it didn't sound so awfully condescending. That made me feel better. It also gave me the chance to do a bit of editing, and that  was even better. I'm not sure I'll post it here. I have to see if my conflicting impulses eventually pan out that way.

We have one of our old bachelor friends coming over this afternoon; he wants help navigating his computer, which Bob will handle. He also wants help understanding his smartphone, and that's going to be my responsibility. This gentleman has previously had a flip phone, or some kind of dumb mobile; he really doesn't like mobiles, but I think he finally admitted that they're necessary in modern life, and so he got the smartphone, and now he needs help navigating it. We'll see if I can help him out.

I think that's all, but I hope to post again later today.

Spoiler warning: Spoilers for the entirety of Arcane Season 2.
Summary: There are worlds and worlds and worlds out there. Remember that. Walking between them is no mean feat, not with The Anomaly. Which isn't an anomaly. Listen ....
Author's notes: I adore Arcane. In the first season, I loved it even when it tore my heart out. In the second season? More of the same, and oh, so much respect for the people who brought it to life, even as they tore my heart out again. After the first season, I wrote what I considered a fixit, saving Powder's family. It turned into a series called "Changing Lanes." This story, however, is a standalone focusing on the second season, the Hexcore and its possibilities. I'm not sure who the speaker is. Heimerdinger?  Perhaps. Ultimately, though, it's a hope that the Hexcore can be a tool to save people I loved, even if saving isn't what we might consider saving
One final note: Isha the wordless is, some people have hypothesized, hearing impaired. That may be the case and, in this story, I think it might be true.

I Done Did It.

Yep. I finally finished my massive crossover. It's a few words over 11,000 words. I'm going to give it one more read-through and then, in a fever of arrogance, I'm going to post it without an editor taking a look at it. (Bob usually does it for me, but in this case there are characters of which he knows nothing. Additionally, he's not been at 100 percent over the last few days because of dental problems.) My only question is whether there's a natural break point that might allow me to post it in two chapters.

I feel accomplished. Please, universe; it's been a hard few days. Can you allow me this without introducing more mice or broken garbage disposals into my otherwise boring retiree life? Yes?

Saturday, and the Sun is Shining

I'm temporarily camped in my livingroom, because the chair I have in the office seems apt to bother my back. (I have to figure out how to make it a pain free sit-down, because Bob mentioned last night that he misses me being there. He said that I should stay where I'm most comfortable, but I don't want him to be lonely, and I miss him. But I digress.)

Being out here, with a temporary office set up on the livingroom table allows me to see the building's courtyard, which one of our residents has turned into a flower-filled vision, with some help from a couple of the other residents. It's really gorgeous, plus I can see some of the cats in other units as they observe the world outside their windows.

kaffy_r: Arcane character Silco, looking menacing (Menacing Silco)
Title: A Night at the Bar

Characters: Vi, Caitlyn Kiramman, Powder, Vander, Jayce Talis, Claggor, Sevika
Words: 8,119, per AO3
Edited by: my beloved
[livejournal.com profile] dr_whuh.
Summary:
An evening that begins with Piltover condescension and Undercity suspicion, and gets bloodier from there, marks the first meeting of two remarkable women. The metal arm on the floor doesn't really play into it. In a timeline where Powder's monkey bomb doesn't kill her family, Vi's and Caitlyn's first meeting is ... memorable.
Author's notes:
I will always love Arcane for a multitude of reasons, despite (or perhaps because of) its beautifully brutal tragedy. But after watching it I decided that, facts be damned, I was going to write a story that made sure Mylo lived. Claggor and Vander, too. And I was going to ensure that her family would help keep Powder herself, and prevent the creation of Jinx. It was going to be one and done, I thought.
Silly me.
This story represents the eighth in the "Changing Lanes" AU series. And I want to thank an AO3 reader, YourRSV, for asking if I might write a story featuring Cait and Vi. I hope this meets some of that request.
NOTE #1: this story takes roughly six years after Powder inadvertently blows Jayce's lab up, and almost six years after Vander and Silco patch together a truce to keep Shimmer out of The Lanes.
NOTE #2: The story contains some notable, brief, violence. However, I promise that a) the violence is necessary to the plot and b) not too violent. At least I hope it doesn't come across that way.

Good lord. It's been an entire month.

And I don't think my absence did teh intarwebz much damage at all.

Still, in the spirit of potentially self-delusional belief that posting at least intermittently will keep me connected to the outer world, I'm doing just that. I haven't the slightest idea of what to write, however. Every time I think "I should post about that," or "this could be an interesting thing to post about," I'm never anywhere near my laptop and I consistently forget that I have a tiny notebook in my purse. I never got into the habit of writing thoughts down as they occur; my loss, of course.

So I'll start in the easiest possible way; with a list.

They Still Think I'm Useful

Over the weekend, I started worrying about whether a) I could get cracking on a rather amorphous story that one of my news outlets wants (large and amorphous stories are the bane of my reporting existence, because they're like trying to find a nice solid handle in a large, poufy pillow) and b) where I should hunt around and pitch story ideas to the editor of the other news outlet I string for.

Yesterday, the editor of the second news outlet asked if I'd be interested in doing a profile on a group operating in their coverage area. Why sure, I said! I finally touched base with the group's contact. We're working on a date to get together for an interview, and I have some research to do, but that's gotten started. I also finally got in touch with an interviewee for the amorphous story. I'll be talking to her tomorrow morning. And getting that first interview means I've finally gotten the ball rolling. Yay, me? Yeah, I think so; at least a tiny yay ....

I'm still working on my latest Arcane AU fic. Someone who read some of the earlier fics in the series said she'd like to see a story featuring Vi and Caitlyn and their relationship. While I like both characters, Mylo, Ekko, and Powder have been closest to my heart. Still, I took it as a good writing challenge to put together a good quality story about people in whom I'm less invested. I'm enjoying getting into Vi's head; it's being written from her point of view.

And now I'm going to sign off, and enjoy time with Bob, while we both geek out on our favorite animes.

Edited by: No one, but reviewed obsessively by me. All mistakes are, thus, my own.
Summary: It was bound to happen. No matter how well Vi hid them, Powder was bound to find the blue crystals. In a world where Powder's monkey bomb never explodes, Powder deals with learning what her sister did to keep her safely away from the hex crystals she'd carried with her to the cannery. A story about coming to grips with secrets.
Notes: In the very first story of this series, one that didn't result in Vander, Claggor and Mylo dying, Vi hid away Powder's satchel, with its cache of explosively dangerous hex crystals, in an attempt to keep Powder and everyone else safe. As the series grew in length, and Powder grew older, I realized that she and the crystals had to come together again. The question I wrestled with was how, and when. And, of course, how it might affect the relationship between the two sisters. I have posited that some of Powder's inner emotional and mental struggles might exist even in this kinder universe, but that they are under much more control.

[personal profile] kaffy_r
Words: 5,182, per AO3
Fandom: Arcane: League of Legends
Summary: She climbed so high these days: could they keep her safe? Did they even know how? In a timeline where Powder's monkey bomb didn't destroy her family, those she loves - including the brother who now obsessively protects her and the boy who adores her - worry about Powder's increasingly dangerous aerial habits.
Notes: I'll always love canon Arcane, despite its tragedies, or perhaps because those tragedies were so well written. But I'm still drawn to this AU I created, largely out of my love for Mylo, and the rest of Powder's family. This builds on earlier stories in my "Changing Lanes" series, including my supposition that Mylo would become a gifted carpenter, and my guess that a grown-up (at least in terms of the Undercity) Powder would begin to display the aerial proclivities and lightning fast emotional changes that Jinx did in the main timeline.

Summary: Shimmer was an evil, Silco knew. A necessary one, but evil nonetheless. He wasn’t surprised that his people couldn’t move it into The Lanes. In a world where Powder’s monkey-bomb never destroyed her family, Vander keeps Shimmer out of The Lanes with a deal, while Silco and Powder meet for the first time.
Notes: I adore canon Arcane because it is a beautiful tragedy and character study, painted with transcendently beautiful animation. But ....
Once again, I've been drawn into the AU I created because I couldn't bear to see Powder destroy her adoptive family. This story was born out of things that were mentioned in earlier stories, particularly "Falling Down, Rising Up" and "Rumors." It is the fifth in my Changing Lanes series.
Warning for drug trafficking: Be aware that the imaginary drug Shimmer is central to this story. It is presented as almost completely destructive.

Title: Feeding the Tree

Fandom: Arcane: League of Legends
Edited by: my beloved [livejournal.com profile] dr_whuh
Summary: (No longer under a cut, since the show has been out for 6 months in most markets.) Up, down, across, under, and - finally - out into a clearing with a tree that could mean shelter from Silco and Shimmer. In a timeline where Powder's monkey bomb didn't kill her family, the need to save people from Silco's drug is just as necessary. How Ekko drags Mylo into a productive plan.
Notes:This is my fourth story in an imagined alternate universe in which Powder doesn't inadvertently kill the people she loves, and thus doesn't end up with Silco. I love the canon universe, and always will, but ... I also love Vander and the boys who were Vi's and Powder's brothers. Because I specifically rather love Mylo as a character, this story focuses on him. It also, I hope, reflects my feeling that some things in this AU would lead to the same outcomes as the canon universe. One thing I think would remain the same is the need for a sanctuary for people who survive Silco's Shimmer drug, and the leadership Ekko showed in setting it up. I've posited a distance far enough from Zaun's pollution and Piltover's notice to allow such a gorgeous tree to grow in isolation. I've tried to keep my description of The Tree as close as possible to what we see in the show, but I hope readers will forgive any of my deliberate or accidental liberties. And finally, I extrapolated Mylo's enjoyment of carpentry and self-taught architecture from his lockpicking skills. There are dots to connect there, I think.

Frankenstein Meme, Day 24

Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?

Oh, a few.

Harriet Jones didn’t die at the hands of Daleks in “The Stolen Earth”. She was too good, too smart, and too necessary to the Whoniverse, in my opinion, and I wrote my own little fixit about that.

(Interesting coincidence that I discovered while trying to remember the name of the episode in which she died — Google-fu can turn up the strangest things —
a poem in the 2017 book by James Goss, “Harriet Jones, PM”, illustrated by Russell T. Davies, has her surviving by falling through a trap door in her livingroom, landing on a mattress, and racing away on a motorbike. RTD says it’s canon. In my 2008 fic “Copper Armour for Miss JonesHarriet survives by falling through her collapsed livingroom floor. She blacks out and wakes up on a camp bed, where her rescuer (Mr. Copper) had placed her. There’s no motorcycle, but they get away in Mr. Copper’s automobile. Of course it’s not plagiarism of any type, but it does amuse me to think that RTD and others wanted to save her, and found a way remarkably similar to the way I chose to save her.)

Donna Noble regains her memories without dying. I always thought her fate was lazy writing on RTD’s part. Yep,
wrote a fixit about that as well, because I just know that the Thirteenth Doctor would have done her damndest to solve what Ten didn’t.

Rory and Amy either
escaped New York, or weren’t sent back by the angel.

Huh. I appear to be pimping my own fixits, but I guess that’s because when I really, really, really, disagree with something in the Whoniverse as presented on the small screen, I’m incapable of not writing something to change what happens. Y’all don’t have to read any of it, and I’ll stop.

But that's what makes me have head!canons.

Other head!canons: Rose, the Ninth Doctor and Jack Harkness were able to avoid Game Station and stay together; Rawhide wasn’t killed by a Red Lectroid; Taura was able to live to a ripe old age with a partner of her choosing, thanks to Miles. Sapphire and Steel escaped the motorway cafe.

God, I have to stop now.

Words: 953 per Google  Docs
Notes: A few days ago, in an effort to get my creative juices flowing, and to pair that with an improvement in my writing discipline, I asked for prompts. The ever-lovely [personal profile] thisbluespirit  was among those who obliged. This stems from her prompt "Steel/Sapphire/Silver - trapped between realities". "Silver, you have some explaining to do."

Liz noticed that Silver ignored Steel’s glower and comment, focusing instead on not letting go of her hand. Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Sapphire reach for Steel’s hand. A blast from behind sent all four of them to the floor to escape being caught in its destructive nimbus.

“I have to agree with your colleague,” Liz said, her voice slightly muffled as she cradled her head on both be-sweatered arms. “This is neither the TARDIS, nor any other place I recognize, although we were in the TARDIS a few moments ago. This is a motorway cafe. I mean, I think it is. Did you plan on bringing me here all along?”

“Well, since you’d followed me into the TARDIS — something of which I’m fairly certain the Doctor would disapprove — I don’t think I had anything to—”

“As if I was going to let you steal —”

“ —I was hardly about to steal it. I just borrowed it for my mission. I didn’t expect they’d stoop to actual weaponry — ”

The conversation came to a halt, as Sapphire leapt to her feet, her eyes shining cobalt. The sounds of attack stopped, although Liz could see their attackers plainly.

“That will last a minute at the most,” Sapphire said, hauling Steel up off the floor. “This place … places … whichever place it is ... plays havoc with my time sense. Miss Shaw, do you have any idea how we can avoid our hunters?”

Liz resisted the urge to roll her eyes; she figured she needed that energy to run. Running was undoubtedly in the offing. “No, not when our surroundings keep changing.”

Even as she spoke, the garage area to which they’d run to avoid the Transient Beings (the title seemed more apt for a religious tract than anything else, she thought distractedly) seemed to blur around her. She actually felt the change, an uncomfortable perception that every bone in her body was stretching. It wasn’t pain, not quite.

Just as it reached a point where she could accurately have called it painful, the discomfort was gone and her stretched bones snapped back to their usual reality. Around her, all traces of motorway cafe were gone, replaced by the roundel-studded white walls and featureless corridors of the Doctor’s TARDIS. (For a moment, Liz did think she could see the outlines of a window through which could be seen a sparkling and barren starfield. She shook her head and it disappeared.)

“Gallifrey.”

The venom in Steel’s one-word reaction to his surroundings was shocking. It was also confusing, until Silver stage whispered in her ear: “The Doctor’s home planet. Time Lords and Elements don’t get along very well. Steel in particular—"

“Steel in particular wants to know what’s going on,” that worthy snapped.

To Liz’s astonishment, Silver — affable, slyly genial Silver — snapped back. “I should think you’d have already figured that out, since you are as brilliant as you are bad-mannered.

“I found a way to get you out.”

Steel didn’t move a muscle, yet Liz was certain he had flinched.

“Well, I suppose I shouldn’t be bad-mannered in return,” Silver said, visibly and deliberately letting go of his momentary ire. “I’m just glad it worked.”

It was his turn to be astonished when Sapphire turned and pulled him close enough for a brief but very definite kiss on the forehead. “Thank you. Thank you on both our behalves.”

Silver actually blushed. Liz paused to appreciate an expression she was reasonably certain Silver rarely showed, before her mind connected several dots. “If I don’t miss my guess, Time Lord is a title to which the Doctor is entitled. I assume that means that the Doctor would not approve of you three being in his TARDIS. And we’re back in his TARDIS, no?”

Sapphire raised one exquisite eyebrow, apparently in agreement, while Silver nodded. Steel looked more disgruntled, something Liz hadn’t thought possible.

“Then I’d suggest we find the TARDIS’ door, and get back to my lab,” she said. Then she stopped. “If we get to the lab, can you guarantee that your Transient Beings won’t follow us there?”

“Have I ever guaranteed your safety, Elizabeth Shaw?”

That stopped Liz in her tracks. He was right; he had never pretended she would be safe around him. In that, Silver’s honesty was admirably close to the Doctor’s. She tried again. “Can you promise you’ll do all you can to protect us from your enemies?”

To her surprise, it was Steel who answered. “If your reality is open to us, then we can mount a defense. We’re rather good at doing that.”  Then he looked at Silver, and Liz could see the palest version of a smile on his face. “Silver, you never cease to amaze me.

“This?” He looked left and right, taking in both lengths of the corridor in which the four of them now stood. “I agree with Sapphire.”

The woman in question laughed softly. Neither man seemed upset by the laughter, and Liz decided that Steel’s comment had just been accepted as an apology.

She coughed. “If none of you mind, I suggest we get the hell out of here. Once we shut the door, and you mount whatever defense you think will work against your opponents, I’d love to hear about exactly where we were — that cafe didn’t feel … right — why you two were there, and why Silver had to rescue you.

“I also desperately need a cup of tea. Or a shot of whisky. Or both.”

She kicked off her heels, and looked at her companions. She grinned, unexpectedly giddy.

“Run for your life!”

I Swear I'll Finish This

The last few weeks have been - as too many weeks have been - "Nah, your brain has nothing to offer the world" time. But let's try again, shall we?

Bob and I will get our second vaccinations on Tuesday, which takes another weight off our shoulders, as does news that both Andy and Emily out in Seattle have gotten their vaccinations. Once April 30 rolls around, I've talked to our old friends Dr. Bob and Dr. Gonzo about them coming over for a celebratory supper. They've had their vaccinations for some time, and the idea of being able to host them and talk in our livingroom sans masks is alluring, to say the least.

We are currently fighting the good fight against a spring ant incursion and I think I'm handling it fairly well, considering that finding small insects busily building six-legged interstates on my floors in the morning is second only to toilet plumbing problems as a trigger.

The non-fanfic fiction I'm working on is now over 4,000 words. I may take a break and go back to the multiple crossover fic that is, ahem, two years late as a gift for someone on my f'list. That one is *checks* now 71 words away from 6,000, with no end yet in sight. I am undecided ....

Hmm: in an effort to keep my writing chops up to speed, can I ask people to leave me prompts? I'll try to do something short (short damnit, kaffyr, short) for all of them, and perhaps that will keep my brain trundling along creatively.

I will also start checking my f'list and actually responding to peoples' posts, as a civilized and communicative human should.

Wow; an entire post. Go, me!

Title: Morpheus, Metamorphosis
Fandom: Doctor Who
Summary: One dreams of her past, another remembers her own. Clara and Ashildr look to each other for their futures
Characters: Clara Oswald, Ashildr/Lady Me
Words: 399 per AO3/406 per Google Docs
Notes: While I'm not sure from where, in the depths of my brain, this double drabble came, I firmly believe memory would be a necessary anchor for time travelers and immortals, as would love. This, I hope, gives a glimpse into both Clara and the woman once known as Ashildr.
Edited by: Absolutely no one. Misspellings and mischaracterizations are, therefore, all my own.

A Few Things I've Thought About Lately

Tangential mentions of our current global medical situation, but with at least 1 and possible 2 giggles. Avoid if you'd like. )

3. I cannot bake cookies without making sure that most of them exit my domicile superfuckingfast. If I don't make that arrangement (with some left for Bob), I will do something vaguely equivalent to going face down in the cookie jar and coming up covered in crumbs. This is not a good look for me.

4. Today we had temperatures in the mid to high 70s (Fahrenheit). We wrestled a couple of our windows open to enjoy fresh air and a cross breeze. We'll have weather that's almost as warm tomorrow, and I am going to enjoy it like whoah.

5. I've managed a few more sentences on my cross-over fic. Having figured out the ultimate reason for the opening dilemma, my next big challenge is determining which characters from which canons get to talk to each other, and how.

6. Finally, here's the late, great Bill Withers doing a live version of "Ain't No Sunshine," complete with violins. I could quite happily listen to this on a loop almost any time, despite the heartbreak implicit in the lyrics (or perhaps because of it). Today it sounded even more lovely to me.

Title: Favor for a Friend
Author:
[personal profile] kaffy_r
Fandom: Doctor Who/Marvel Cinematic Universe
Characters: Twelfth Doctor, Natasha Romanov, Bill Potts
Words: 3,840
Summary: The blandly bureaucratic alphabet soup acronyms attached to the hulking St. Petersburg building didn't disguise its ominous history. Natasha Romanov knew that intimately. Perhaps that's why the Doctor turned to the Black Widow to rescue a friend caught in its depths.
Author's Note: Not only is this a delayed
[community profile] fandom_stocking  2018 gift for [personal profile] trobadora  (who shares my fannish attachment to the Twelfth Doctor, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Natasha Romanov) I forgot to post it here, after posting it on AO3 last April. Lawsey. Anyhow, for those who pay attention, this isn't their first meeting; that took place during "Encounter at the Rembrandt Hotel."
NOTE: For those among my readers who live or have lived in or near St. Petersburg, I hope my use of the original Bolshoy Dom, and its history, as a building block of the story does not come off as thoughtless or flip. It felt very possible that the Russian government, in a world where most governments think of the TARDIS and her Doctor as potential tools, might seek a way to capture her. It also felt right that Natasha, as a survivor of The Red Room program, who want to rescue someone from that building.
Edited by: My Best Beloved, who I thank for catching a couple of really bad mistakes before they could embarrass me.
