I really like your thoughts here. We're coming at the season, and our look at the Doctor, from different angles, and it's fun to compare and contrast. You see the Doctor as part of a larger creation - the entire Cosmos - and that's truly elegant, to snatch a word from another poster used elsewhere.
Perhaps the two views can intersect in some ways; I look at the personal and you look at the universal. While I can't see the Doctor as the sole savior of the universe - I think he might be an important one, but not the sole one - I can definitely see the universe deciding that he was necessary, and preferring a damaged Doctor to none at all.
The Doctor may suffer from this, his companions and other people may suffer, but given that the alternative is universal destruction, one could call this a small price to pay.
There's the intersect. I'm talking about the damage, and you are seeing what could arguably be viewed as the bigger picture.
