One of my memories of Australia (circa 1975) is the two South Australia phone books: one for Adelaide, one for the entire rest of the state (380,000 sq. mi., 1/9 the contiguous U.S.). Neither was a whole inch thick. In the second one, you could see the size of a town by the number of digits in the phone numbers.
