Dept. of Welcome to the Working Week
Monday, 17 March 2014 11:56 pmNot Polyphiloprogenitive
I certainly am not. I'd planned to post something at least once during the weekend, and didn't, but I've decided not to be overly fussed about it. I'm starting the week with a bit of an update to make up for it.
The — we interrupt this Monday morning post with a Monday evening update. Because I stopped writing the post on my own laptop, and got up to walk to my office to start work on my work laptop, figuring I'd take a moment out to complete the post later. Time to work, thought I.
And then my glasses broke, from high atop my nose. The metal frame broke, to be precise. Now I had planned to go to get a new prescription next week, because it has been ... ahem ... eight to 10 years since I got this prescription and this pair of glasses. But life has a habit of kicking me into doing things Right This Fucking Minute by virtue of such little divertissements.
Nope, the old glasses couldn't be soldered; the lenses wouldn't fit into them if it was possible. And, nope, I had only one other pair of glasses. 15-17 years old. Because the ones that were actually only 12 or so years old ... broke when I went to put them on. In the same place on the metal frame that my current ones broke. And neither could be taped together, either.
I can't do my job without my glasses, because I don't have nearly as much vision without them. I called my boss, told him I was off to find a same-day optometry and eyeglass making place. Got the place all right, and thanked my lucky stars that the very last of my Mum's last gift would pay for what would probably be about $700 in glasses.
But they couldn't make my glasses the same day. Nor in one day, nor in two. Possibly in three, more likely in five. Because bad eyes w/astigmatic curves and far-sightedness and other assorted ocular evil.
They were able to make me a set of "just look straight ahead at the computer" temporaries, with which I am typing now. But I shouldn't be, because my head is aching and my vision is less than happy with me.
But I did want to tell you about why I didn't post my thoughts on Moffat and his Mysteries, or about the great dinner my First Born cooked for me. Reasons, you see. Reasons.

Has a nice ring and you can dance to it. Course, I can see the horror as it unfolds. you are lucky in this respect (for a few days at least). *CACKLES*

Date: Tuesday, 18 March 2014 05:26 pm (UTC)I broke my glasses the other week, but for a wonder, for the first time in my life I actually have spares the same age. (The best/worst time was when I put a bag full of music books down on the floor, and then spent a while looking for my glasses before realisation dawned and I lifted the bag to find utterly flattened specs. The lady at the opticians gave me a Look when I took them back in, wondering innocently if anyone could possibly rescue and unflatten them...)

Date: Tuesday, 18 March 2014 05:32 pm (UTC)I love the music book story - although the optician lady gave you A Look, were the spectacles at all salvageable?

Date: Tuesday, 18 March 2014 05:44 pm (UTC)The spectacles were so very unsalvageable, that was why the optician-lady was giving me a Look. She was a very nice lady, though, and straightened out other glasses of mine at other times for free (though I think she thought I was the type of person who probably needed them on a string for safety or something). :-D

Date: Wednesday, 19 March 2014 03:38 am (UTC)Oh, aye. I think one of the phrases heard most often around my place is "Where did I put my glasses?"

Date: Saturday, 22 March 2014 12:46 pm (UTC)I went to the optician's yesterday, and ended up getting new glasses after all (after I broke the other ones just before the appointment I did fear that might happen), since they had anti-glare coating and lighter lenses and that's why I had a bit of trouble when I changed to the spares. Anyway, at that point the Nice Lady (who is probably the one who gave me the Look a long time ago) helped me choose glasses again, which is difficult because my face is too narrow and most of them look scary. She also stopped me choosing ones that she thought were more appropriate for a 70 year old, but abandoned a brief attempt to make me more fashionable (dark frames are so not me).
And then all the power in the street went out. And then the other assistant came by and blamed me for jinxing them because weird stuff happened last time I was in. (I don't remember this but it's entirely possible.) In the end, I had to go home and Nice Lady phoned me back to pay for everything later.
I also found 6 books for a fandom I wrangle at £3.50, so all in all, it was a productive morning, if a little bit more expensive than I'd hoped. (The Nice Lady reminded me I'd got a free eye test with the glasses, but I don't think saving £20 and then spending £109 extra is actually that cost effective, but glasses and eyesight are important.)
(I hope your proper glasses have arrived by now!)

Date: Wednesday, 19 March 2014 05:11 pm (UTC)Are drug store reading glasses or something like that a viable temporary?
no subject
Date: Wednesday, 19 March 2014 05:28 pm (UTC)As for what's currently going on, the cost did drop by a couple of hundred dollars because there was no one-day premium; it's still pretty pricey, but less than I'd expected. The optician's gave me free temporary lenses that are part of my overall prescription, giving me the ability to read words on the screen and get work done. They are in my new frames, and, when the full prescription lenses come in, I'll go over, they'll take the temporary lenses out, and will put the permanent lenses in.
