Weekend Roundup (includes 1 Kickstarter pimp)

It's been a few days since I last did anything but check desultorily on other folks' posts (oh, and post Chapter 22 of Hearts & Moons, which small victory I still feel I must trumpet, or at least flute.) When it came to other things, life kept getting in the way.  But at the end of this very long week, of which more, anon, I think I finally have the spoons to do some sort of catch-up.

First, thanks to everyone who commented on my entry to the spoken word meme fun. I had a lot of fun with it. I am also enjoying other peoples' words -  [personal profile] a_phoenixdragon , [personal profile] flowsoffire , [livejournal.com profile] eve11 and the delightful [personal profile] jjpor , whose chatty entry into the meme I'm enjoying a whole bunch. (I really should let him know that, no, going on at length isn't a bad thing, it's a good thing.)

I'm working on Chapter 23 of the aforementioned WIP o'doom ((c) eve11, I think), and feel good about that.

Work is really grinding me down; I'm realizing how difficult it is for me to make the 2.5 stories per day minimum. The stupid, unrealistic, counter-productive minimum. And now that the Idiot In Charge has forced my boss to haul in people who drop below two stories a day for disciplinary warnings, I'm going to be a lot more busy on the union side. In fact, I spent Friday in one of those with someone who was hauled in for doing only 1.8 stories a day.  *eyeroll* When I talked to my boss off the record about this whole thing, I actually told him, "This is killing me." I feel so bad for him, because he's caught in the middle between the Idiot In Charge and the reporters he actually thinks are smarter, at least about this sort of thing. I've probably mentioned that before, so we'll move on.

I had my car towed Friday. I'd gotten up very early to head downtown for the disciplinary hearing and parked in the lot I normally do before I get onto the el to head into the Loop. But I parked in a section of the lot I don't normally do - and failed to see the "don't park here, it's not part of the free lot" sign. Soooo ... $198 later, I got my car released by the Lincoln Park Pirates. The lady in the towing company's office was very glad that I wasn't mad at her; I told her it was my own damned fault, so why should I be mad at her? Still, that was $200 I had planned for something else. Grumpy [personal profile] kaffy_r  is grumpy.

We sheltered a stray dog (one of the little wooly types, a Peke-mutt mix) for about 12 hours mid-way through this past week, before having to take him down to the Anti-Cruelty Society. He was running around loose Wednesday and someone rang our doorbell, asking if we knew who he belonged to. I made the mistake of thinking that it belonged to one of our upstairs neighbors, so the lady who rang my doorbell and I chased him down and I brought him in - only to find out from the upstairs neighbor that, no, he wasn't hers. I couldn't just let him go back on the street, especially not in our neighborhood, so BB took him up to a vets to check for a computer chip (no such luck), and we held him in our cat carrier overnight, before heading down to Anti-Cruelty.

They keep animals as long as possible, as compared to the city pound, and I made up "we found this dog, and here's where you can get him back" posters that I'll put up tomorrow. Although I'm not certain that whoever had him should get him back - even in the house, your dog should have a collar on, if only to prevent this sort of thing from happening; I'm guessing he got out. Also, I haven't seen any lost dog posters up, which tells me that maybe they weren't all that fussed about losing him.

BB and I watched Frozen Friday night. I liked it a lot, with the exception of a 180 degree personality change on the part of one character. That  could have been written better, but the rest of the story was really well written, avoiding a lot of the saccharine things that can bother me about Disney. I liked the music, the animation, the relationship between the two sisters ... in all, I'd give it a solid B on my own personal chart.

We also watched Pacific Rim, which I can overall give a C+ to - largely because, let's face it, it's live-action mecha, so I shouldn't have been expecting as much as fandom had somehow led me to believe was going to be there in terms of characterization and, yes, female empowerment. And yet I still liked it, both visually and kinetically. And if  they'd taken out 10 minutes of action and replaced it with 15 more minutes of characterization, I'd have enthusiastically upped it to a B, or possibly a B+ because, hey, Idris Elba and Ron Perlman, and Rinko Kikuchi and, yes, because it is live action mecha, and I love anime. As it was, BB said the best actor in it was the little girl who played Kikuchi's character as a child, and I'm inclined to agree.

And finally, please, consider helping this Kickstarter campaignCrossed Genres is the kind of magazine I wish I'd been able to read back when the type of SF&F magazines ran the vast, diverse gamut from Analog to Isaac Asimov's. It champions diversity, it looks for quality writing, it's worth it. There are only three days to go on its campaign, and as I write this, they are about $3,400 away from their goal. There are a lot of good causes out there, and when you have a limited amount of money to give, the arts often have to give way to more immediate life-saving charities. But the arts save lives, too, so if you have an extra $5 or $10, think about helping this campaign beat the deadline.

Ah, I haven't listened to yours yet! I too am still catching up.

Oh, that sucks about work, and about the towed car, :( But good on you for looking out for the poor lost pup. I was driving down the road today, rounded a corner and a little shih-tzu came charging at my car from the bottom of a driveway at the edge of a pretty big yard. No fence, no leash; she obviously wasn't supposed to be there. I was going slowly so I just stopped and was going to get out and try to corral her when a guy came around from the driveway, followed by a contrite kid about seven. "Oh thank god," he said, "My little sister let her out! Thanks for stopping!" So the doggie was rescued.

I love that Chapter...it is just so awesome and it made me so, so happy, reading it!!

Eeeee!!! I'll have to check his out. Kinda love him (though he and I have never really officially 'met', lol!)

YUS. Feel free to gimme when done. Or even before you're done. Or anytime, really.

Arrrghhh. OMG, I feel for your boss, but...seriously? Do they want to run a paper with no reporters. Well. REAL reporters? Cause that will be what happens. UGH. I really, REALLY dislike Moron at the Top.

Oh honey...that sucks. One little error gets you nailed. I'm sorry, bb...

Ohhh, how kind of you!! Bless you, bb. Hope puppy finds a new home and a better owner!!

D'ya need me to pimp Kickstarter? Cause I could totally do that...

Ohhh, hate that it became 'MatT'. Meh. But at least it will be easier to talk about him? Or maybe more confusing...O_o I hope he does get the axe. His ideas are stupid. His harebrain has harebrains. Ridiculous.

Got it pulled up now. Settled in now to listen...oh! Wait! TEA. Dammit...gotta get that first, lol!

Done, BB....

Net trolling. Think I found it on Tumblr originally. Kept it. Stare at it while writing filth unfit for consumption whilst pondering Life the Universe and Everything. So...went to make icons and decided 'why the hell not' and created this lovely out of the lovely that was already there. Didn't have to do much...

Sorry, whut?

Oh no! Parking is always such a disaster here. :/

I hope your dog friend finds his way home soon!

I really wanted to like Pacific Rim a lot more than I did. Everyone said such good things, and I was really excited to see it, but it just didn't grab me the way it did a lot of other people.

Haha, that sounds like a great sign.

Hmm, it seems like there must be some balance between enough worldbuilding to be interesting, enough about the characters to grab people's attention, but enough missing that people want to explore the blank spaces. Like, if it's totally great and self-fulfilled, maybe people are too satisfied with the original to care much about fanfic/meta/whatever?

Sorry about the work stress, and the unexpected parking cost.

Hope someone finds their lost dog. Poor thing.

I feel basically the same about Frozen as you did - although I might rate it higher because I love Kristen Bell so much, and thus got a major kick out of imagining Veronica Mars as Anna.

Pacific Rim, I couldn't like, though I tried. It was entertaining and the effects were cool, but on the whole I'm only glad I watched it because now I know what people are talking about.

Yay writing!

Urgh, about work and the parking on top of that, but good on you for not yelling at the poor woman at the lot. She probably gets far more undeserved abuse than any one person should have to bear.

And poor puppy! I hope that he finds a loving home to go to or return to.

I followed that kickstarter link and have been reading through a few stories on the website. Looks like a great publication.

Trumpeting it is, definitely! WIP's-of-doom are a permanent war ;P Sorry to hear about the work-related stress, though ♥

Eeeeep! Well, it makes me better about mine starting in 2011. *high fives* More seriously though… they're hard =P Is your interest/motivation still going even though making actual progress is difficult? That's my own problem—well, the WIP is Harry Potter and I almost entirely moved fandoms since, so at this point I just want to ditch the damn thing, haha. *headdesk*

LJ is the best stress safety valve ^_^

He is! I loveeee Canton ♥ (And I love yours!)

That's pretty great! :D The timeline thing does sound really handy and a clever way to deal with things…

I never followed his stuff very much, but the little I saw was really hilarious, it's sad… :(

I did not rate Pacific Rim either very highly. Too much mecha , not enough story.

Argh about the parking! That's so frustrating!

Argh also about your job (having had to deal with too many stupid decisions from the idiots in charge over the course of my working career, as I suspect most of us have). Fingers crossed that things improve eventually.

But yay for getting the dog to a decent shelter, from which it hopefully will find a good home.

LOL, this is my all-purpose "stress" icon. (I love your Vermeer icon, btw).

Your story makes me glad I don't have to try to park in Boston. People who live in the city often have to rent parking spaces that can cost as much as their apartments. Recently, a couple of parking spaces sold for something like $40,000 each.

I work in academia; we have our own very special brand of The Idiots in Charge. : 0

LOL, you don't have to worry about insulting me with remarks about Boston, because most of them are true (okay, maybe a little exaggerated). It's no lie that the roads around here are a nightmare of twisty/turny one-way streets and alleyways so narrow you could barely squeak a bicycle down them, let alone a car. I think partly as a result of the streets, drivers have just become insane. My brother-in-law drives a truck and makes deliveries in the city all the time, and the war stories he can tell would make your hair curl. Thankfully for him, he has an ability to get into a Zen bubble when he's working, but he usually comes home at night utterly wasted.

I always get around by public transit, which is fairly inexpensive (my monthly transit pass is subsidized 75% by my employer, which tells you how eager they are to have us NOT park in here). It's also far easier to navigate. The system is old and prone to futzing out at inopportune moments, but where I have to put up with maybe one or two serious breakdowns per year, the average auto commuter can count on being stuck in traffic on a pretty regular basis.

Yes, $40,000 for a parking space. The people who bought them are probably going to rent them, and the rents will probably pay for the spaces within a year (and within five years probably pay off the owners' mortgages on their houses, in ten years put their kids through college, and in 15 years allow the owners to retire in an oceanfront condo in Florida). Owning a parking space in Boston is like being able to mint money in your basement.

I was mostly familiar with Vermeer as a result of the famous theft of "The Concert" from the Gardener Museum back in 1990, but it was the "Girl with a Pearl Earring" novel that made me look at his work more closely. I love his "household interior" paintings in particular; they make you feel like you could literally step through the painting and into the past. He's the only artist where I actually own a book about his paintings.

From: [identity profile] eaweek.livejournal.com
The other way to 'mint money in your basement' is to own apartment buildings and rent them out to students. The big universities admit more students than they have housing for, so the kids are desperate for apartments near their colleges. They get charged $2000-$3000+ per month or more for units that are, to put it kindly, hovels. There's almost no oversight by the city, so the landlords get away with charging all outdoors, but not maintaining the properties. Kids have actually died in these places, but no changes get made. Meanwhile, the landlords have become millionaires.

From: [identity profile] eaweek.livejournal.com
No idea. The Globe ran a three-part series just a couple of days ago, highlighting the lack of oversight in student apartments. There's an agency that's supposed to handle complaints, inspect apartments when new tenants move in, etc., but apparently it has no teeth. No matter how many complaints are brought (and lawsuits filed), the landlords get off with a tap on the wrist. What blew my mind is that the agency in charge of this is still using paper record-keeping systems. (!!!!!!!) The new major is saying he's going to look into this whole problem (too bad it took someone dying to prompt action), but I'll believe that when it happens.

Still, at least there are one or two nice fannish things around the edges - and well done on WIP progress! You should definitely do some trumpeting for that.
