 Hail, and How!

Yup. August 1 and out of relatively calm day, the clouds gathered, the skies opened, (like, "can't see half way up the street" opened,) the wind kicked up, and we got hail. 

Hail.

It's going to be interesting going out tonight to see "Guardians of the Galaxy," methinks. 

ETA: And thunder. Forgot the thunder. And it's all still going on.

I've seen like five Facebook statuses about Guardians of the Galaxy in the last hour and I still have no idea what it is.

In a nutshell? A rag-tag group of people save the galaxy. And Karen Gillan plays a psychotic killer with major daddy-issues. (at least from what I've heard, iirc)

Yup. For the limited time she's on screen, she does radiate "badness" which is cool.

It's a story set in the Marvel comics universe, and I'm pretty familiar with many of the characters, since I read about most of them in the late 70's and in the 80's. It's as masakochan says, plotwise ... and there are lots of tie-ins to the rest of Marvel's cinematic universe, too. And since I am rather a fan of both MCUs, this was a lot of fun.

Ha! We also had sudden hail and thunder here yesterday, half a world away :-)

Also frost. And blizzards in a few upland areas. Still, I stand by what I've always said about Australia, where ski-holidayers talk of 'going to the snow' and no-one knows what the word 'antifreeze' means: 'Here, you talk about going to the snow. Where I come from, the snow comes to us.' :D

Several of my RL friends went to see GotG yesterday, and said it's a lot of silly giggles and is harmlessly enjoyable. We OTOH went to see Dwayne Johnson's Herc yesterday, and thoroughly enjoyed it. But most of all I'm hanging out for Expendables 3, and likewise for my female besties. So much testosterone, so little sensibility... what's not to love? Heh.

Ah, The Expendables franchise! That looks like a lot of good-natured, 'splodey fun; I always get the feeling, when I see the ads for those movies, that everyone involved is having a hell of a good time.

GotG fits nicely into the Marvel cinematic universe, with fairly well written tie-ins to movies past and future. The lead was charming, with a more-than-decent sense of comedic timing, the two CGI'd characters were, in some respects, more human and affecting than many of the secondary real life human characters ... and it rocked the stupid late 70s pop quite satisfactorily. Heh.

We're going to see GotG tomorrow night (as that is the formal opening night; other friends either saw it on pre-screenings or in other countries where it had already opened). And I think I have devised a way to endure the toxically insipid, charisn'tmatic Chris Pratt: I'm determinedly thinking of his character as a sort of real-life Philip J Fry. Because I have a bit of a soft spot for Philip J Fry, and there is a certain stolen-from-his-own-time resonance there :D

I've never seen Mr. Pratt in anything else, so I've not had the misfortune of seeing him do badly. He and the film seemed to suit each other. I'll be interested in hearing whether he was more or less unpalatable to you than you expected. Heh. (As for Philip J. Fry, I have a soft spot for him as well. Although I don't plan on drinking Slurm anytime soon.)

Ah, I'd never seen him in anything but the GotG trailers - in fact, never heard of him! I was just reacting to his presence in said trailers :-)

He's pretty reasonable throughout the film - and the first scene in which you him made me smile a little bit.

Oh, I seem to be hearing about hail all the time in France. I don't know whether the weather is just that crazy this year or whether I simply didn't notice how often it seemed to happen in previous years, but holy shit… can't tell you the amount of times we got to see farmers who had just lost half their crops in the news.

Anyway—I hope this calms down and you can get to the movies safely =P

Your hail sounds much more serious than the pea-sized bits we got for about 15 minutes. It has now ended, I can say with much thanks to the gentled elements, and if I can just get my stories done, we'll be able to enjoy Intergalactic Swashbuckling tonight!

Yeah, in my area it never got very bad, but some of the madness that happened in other places was not pea-sized. More like tennis balls o.O

Hi there! The weather did indeed calm down, and we got to the movie and enjoyed it a whole hell of a lot. (When you can cry over a CGI houseplant and an equally-CGI'd homicidal raccoon, yeah, it's a good night at the movies. Heh.)

I don't know about bad weather (it is beautiful here) but I am jealous you are getting to go to GOTG. My loving wife isn't interested and my kids have seen it already. I will have to wait till it is on Netflix.

Aww, you should go by yourself; it's great fun! Or find a buddy who'd be willing to batchelor-movie-night it with you!

The storm didn't last too long, so ultimately it was more of a weather glitch than anything. Hail in summer, though; unusual for inside the dcity limits at the very least.

I don't go to movies alone. It always seemed like a creepy thing to me (no logic behind that thought... it is just how it feels for me).

Most of my buddies in Winnipeg are not the guys night out types. The only two exceptions are either very broke and work evenings or so busy it is ridiculous (also I don't know that DDC still goes to movies).

This year has been CRAZY for hail everywhere it seems. I don't know if it's like hearing a word on the radio or not, but I was caught in two ridiculous hail storm last month (and was very very grateful not to have my windshield smashed, because many were).

I hope that Guardians is great! It won't be making it's way to the local theatre for at least three weeks, but once it does... :D

Guardians was a hell of a lot of fun; definitely one to go to when it arrives in town!
