I Am In Mourning. Sort Of.

My lava lamp has died.

I'm not kidding, you guys.

No, really. It was better than soporifics or tranks to chill me out. BB says he's going to check to see if it's just a dead bulb. If it is, he'll find another one. If the whole thing is dead, he says he's going to get me another one. I love that man of man.

(Plasma lamps were always cooler anyway. Almost as cool as Galileo thermometers. Of which I have several, as kind friends keep giving them to me!)

Plasma lamps are indeed cool; as I'm sure you'd appreciate, they remind me (illogically or not) of Tesla.

I am, however, rather inordinately fond of watching the slow evolving revolutions and evolutions of wax suspended in liquid. I wasn't kidding when I said it was better than tranks for cooling me out. I watch one of those silly things, I zone out, and just admire the globes as they rise and fall.

Those were fun to read. I want to find DIY that actually uses wax, but I'm afraid that would be rather labor intensive.

We will be going to a fantastic store where you can get all kinds of scientific surplus equipment, American Science and Surplus (known by the evocative acronym ASS around here) to hunt down a new lamp, since I lack the requisite tech-fu to follow even such easy instructions.

BB is pretty amazing with things like this, so I'm crossing my fingers. If it truly is just a dead light bulb, then hallelujah!

Indeed; one becomes uncommonly attached to the oddest of household items. They aren't quite pets, but they're more than "that lamp" or "that toaster."

I understand. I was devastated when my pretty flowered glass lamp with the three-way light stopped working. A local repair guy was able to get the light working again, but the three-way switch is bust and he wasn't able to replace it, so it's just an ordinary lamp--either it's on or it's off. I really miss the option of being able to have soft light first thing in the morning, in winter especially. I don't wake up easily at that time of year.

So I feel your pain on the lava lamp. We used to have one at our house, waaaay back in the late 70s/ early 80s. It was pretty cool. : )

Oh, goodness, three-way lamps! I love them for their flexibility, and I used to hate it when the switches would go, because it's so hard to find replacements. Our current three-way broke, and BB was actually able to find a replacement for it. It doesn't allow for a dynamic difference between the three light levels anymore, but it does provide me three levels.

I can also understand the need for some immediate, non-harsh morning light in the depths of winter.

Indeed ... I'd really like to have this one working, because it came from my son, and it's kind of cute and particularly silly looking. But if I have to bid it a tearful farewell, my BB tells me that we'll be heading out to a store (American Science and Surplus; midwestern Americans might know it as a heaven for everything from scientific surplus equipment to, well, lava lamps) to find me a replacement.

As lava lamps are propelled by the heat of an incandescent bulb, and we are gradually phasing out the manufacture of such bulbs because they give off too much heat, in a few years it might become difficult to revive a darkened LL.

I suppose a small heater fitted into the socket might be constructed by an enterprising techie.

Too true. I shall have to hoard the necessary incandescent bulbs, since other things that have the heat necessary to propel the wax in its briny sea - the glare of a disapproving mother, the fiery heat of 10,000 nuns suns, Tom Hiddleston - do not otherwise meet the required specs.

It does, it does. Mind you, I suddenly thought last night that we might just be dealing with a loose wiring situation in the base, and maybe we'll try to fix that situation.
