Well, this is a first ....

I decided I would try this. I don't believe I've ever done this before, because I have lots of lovely LJ friends and many here at/over at Dreamwidth. But it couldn't hurt, she said with admirable disregard for Murphy-ish reality. 

Maybe I'll see you there; I intend ti go through a lot of the posts over there.

As usual, I do not understand. What is going on with that post?

Consider the post a sort of invitation to a soiree, or an invitation to make new friends. The idea is that you post information about yourself on a thread "a friendship thread." Others do the same thing. You have a chance to look over information about other folks on LJ, see if they share some interests or other commonalities with you, and if they do, you introduce yourself by responding to their particular post on the thread, and asking if they'd mind if you "friended" them. It's a social event, sort of like speed-dating for friendships, and it is generally a positive thing.
