Happy May Day, Now That It's Almost Over

I had a wonderful evening with BB last night. I enjoyed all the lovely bubbly I had (3 tulip's worth, which probably isn't all that much.)

What I didn't enjoy is the hangover I had. From three glasses of asti spumante. I am so very, very old. 

I can't understand why I don't get any kind of hangover from a gin martini or two, and suffer quite noticeably with the wine.

I did finish my MCU/Who crossover, and it's been posted to the requisite fandom_stocking  stocking. I hope its recipient likes it.

It's not you, it's the Asti. It's infamous for giving people ridiculous hangovers relative to the amount of booze they had. It's because of the sugar and other stuff that flavors it.

Gin is much "cleaner," so yes, it makes perfect sense that you have less of a hangover from it.

A good way to get less of a hangover is to have a pint of water before bed. It's not a cure-all, but it does help.

You're right about getting water into one's system before hitting the bed. I thought I'd put enough into me, but I woke part way through the night and realized I was very thirsty, and figured out I should have had much, much more water.

You didn't miss anything; I'm just glacially slow. I was able to finish a bunch of stories for peoples' stockings last December, before the stockings went live in January, but I also provided something like four IOUs, and I'm slowly, sloooowly, making good on each IOU.

Suffering from wine may be an indication of an intolerance or allergy to one of the components. A friend of mine found he couldn't drink beers or wine without getting splitting headaches because of the use to make them. The only exception was Piat d'or and he never knew why that was the case.

I'm definitely used to red wines giving me headaches, but this was a white wine. I can't help wondering if the hangover stemmed from the fact that it wasn't a still wine, but a bubbly.

Yeast is the word missing from my comment.

I suspect it isn't the bubbles as that is just carbonation so unless carbonated drinks always have that effect I suspect it is some additive in the wine. I remember the scandal a few decades back when it was found that some Italian winemakers were adding all sorts of crap to their wines ranging from animal blood to diethylene glycol (iirc). The was a similar scandal involving Austrian wines according to wikipedia.

Edited to add that methanol had also been added to some wines to increase alcohol content.

Bloody hell. (Huh. Inadvertent pun. And I actually like blood sausage and blood pudding, and duck's blood soup - yum! - so maybe I'd go for that.

Likely it is the tannens in it - or you are allergic to the process of it. More people get headaches, sick or hangovers off of wine. Especially if they are not used to it.

I've had hangovers caused by tannins, but this wasn't a red wine. I was saying to maruad that I wonder if the problem comes from it not being a still wine. perhaps the carbonation had something to do with it?

Might be. How white is bottled and fermented is vastly different than how a red is. And white/blushes are always quick to give me a headache.

I've always been all right with gin but not wine. I only drink white wine as well.

I'm just about convinced that it was the carbonation of the asti spumante that did me in, possibly because there's more sugar in carbonated wines like champagne and asti spumante. When I drink still white wines, I get no headaches or bad results. It's normally reds that hit me badly.

Yes, sugar can be lethal too. I often think coke as a mixer has more of a detrimental effect on me than the alcohol it's mixed with.

I learned to like cola late in life, so I never developed the habit of putting it into drinks; perhaps, given my bad history with headaches and such, it was a good habit to avoid.
