Nah, that doesn't happen until they ... you know, I can't even begin to say it, because it's just too much of a jinx.

But, yeah, that's when Armageddon happens.

But the title of the story is "The Last Pennant before Armageddon." They don't even talk about the other thing -- except the spirit of Al Capone, but everyone shushes him.

I watched the game at lydy's place; they have FS1 on their cable plan. With much texting to various people in lieu of being able to watch with fellow Cubs fans.

Most of the stories in The Thrill of the Grass (which is where I read it) are worth reading, but TLPBA is of course the one that had most resonance for me.

Oh, that is brilliant! I just played it for BB. I got up this morning and actually checked four different newspaper sites, just to make sure that what I saw last night wasn't a poorly digested piece of gristle.

It wasn't.

I had my mother send me a photo of the Tribune front page. I wanted to see if they actually used the second-coming-of-Christ font size. The only reason they didn't is because instead they used a photo that covered most of the page.

Yeah, I saw that, and there was a little part of me that snickered, since that kind of single-picture layout was something that the Sun Times used to excel at, and the Trib often sneered at. I think the picture they used was from an old Pioneer Press colleague of mine, Nuccio DiNuzzo, who is a lovely man, and deserves all the praise his pics get at the Trib.

You're talking about the Red Sox, right? Yeah, that's altogether possible. We tried not to feel jealous when the Bosox won. Interestingly enough, Theo Epstein, who helped build the Red Sox teams that won their most recent victories, is the man behind the Cubs resurgence.

As for the other Sox team in the American League? It's hard for White Sox fans to rejoice with us. Although I must say, a couple of my White Sox fan friends have been pretty gracious.

*Raises hand.* Born and raised Red Sox fan. I drove my father out to the cemetery when they finally won the World Series so that he could tell his father who'd lived and died without seeing them win one they finally pulled it off. I'm pulling for the Cubs all the way.

I saw that in some of the articles I looked at. Not sure if two different teams is enough to say the man has a magic touch, but it sure is enough to make a lot of people happy.

All of this resonates with me, so very much - and I've only been a Cubs fan for 35 years! I inherited them because, when I moved to Chicago in 1981, I moved to the North Side, which is Cubs land. (Also, to be honest, I disapprove of the American League's designated hitter rule.) So I'ved through at least two heartbreaking years, even if I didn't live through the 1969 awfulness.

I think Epstein can be proud of taking two teams who were never expected to win again in their entire history, and helping reverse that.

Thanks for the happy feelings, my dear. I'm trying to think of some European/non-North American thing to which I could compare this - perhaps to a fan of some bottom-tier football (soccer-type)team making it to the fooball finals (whatever those are)? Or some tiny overlooked country finally winning the World Cup?

Yeah, I've got nothing. Suffice it to say that we have 108 years of not winning the baseball World Series (which, because North American baseball is very parochial, only features American and Canadian teams), and 71 years of not even making it to the World Series, the Cubs have a chance to end the 108-year drought.

I didn't recall the Cubs being part of the movie, but that doesn't surprise me. We'll see how tonight goes, though; I'm kind of nervous. She said with admirable restraint.
