Thirty-Seven Years

Thirty-Seven years ago today, just about now, Bob and I were saying "I do" to each other, in a friend's livingroom.

My mother and brother traveled from Canada to be there. My mother brought me the wedding gown in which she'd married my father. It fit, and I wore it.

Friends came to the wedding; friends made the wedding possible, with livingroom, a sheet cake bought by a friend, a small buffet made by the same wonderful woman who'd lent us her home, and hammer dulcimer music by one of Bob's fellow musicians. A friend married us, and we didn't mention to Mum that he'd been ordained in the back of his cab as a tip. 

Later that evening, carolers knocked on the door, and we invited them in to sing. Bob rubbed the pot roast all over his chest. And we were married. 

It was the best choice I ever made. Better, worse, sick, healthy, always together, and better together. 

I love you, Bob. Thank you for being my husband.

I always loved those glasses. He doesn't have them now, but I still think he's the handsomest guy in the room.

Thank you for the good wishes! As for the picture, I'm with you on Bob's young face. He also got likened a lot to John Lennon and John Sebastian of The Lovin' Spoonful. I don't think I've ever been compared to anyone before this.

(We're both a good deal older, greyer, and saggy-er than when the picture was taken. Heh.)

I was thinking about your visit the other day. I still remember the wonderful harmonies you guys added to the Robert Earl Keen Jr tune I was singing.

I think it was... 1986... my first con was in 1983 (the Baltimore Worldcon). Keycon started in 1984 and I think it was the 3rd Keycon. Was Anne McCaffery the guest of honour? If so then it was 1986.

Surprisingly - at least to me - it turns out that we were guests at Keycon 8 in 1991: I had to look here, but once I saw Gordie Dickson's name, it slotted correctly into my memory.

I still have the lobster, you know.

My timeline was way off but 1991 makes more sense. I don't think I was even playing guitar in 1986, or barely if I was.

Ah, yes. Didn't mean to be so obscure. This relates to our mutual love for Warren Zevon's music. Zevon had a rather grim knack of putting the darkest lyrics to spritely rock melodies. Sometimes they were lyrics that cynically looked at societal awfulness (and in the case of this song, it makes me think of Brett Kavanaugh), but they were still pretty dark and awful. In the case of "Excitable Boy" this was especially true.
