As It Says on the Tin

I'm still here. And I want to post again on a number of things, including getting back up to speed in writing fic again; my deep need to comment on other peoples' posts, many of which have intrigued me, or made me want to share a thought or two; learning that my childhood home has been saved from teardown by being moved slightly; my ambivalent thoughts on the holiday season this year; the wonderful smell of the Christmas tree we just brought into the livingroom; and my inordinate happiness at sending out 59 hard-copy holiday cards, with some electronic cards to follow ...

... but I can't get my brain to cooperate. 

Still decompressing, and still trying to figure out the whole "retired" thing.

...Your childhood home was saved by being moved slightly? How on earth does a house get moved slightly? Inquiring minds want to hear this particular story!

It's actually very easy to move houses; I covered the move of a historic home from the town I covered to the next town over. And that house was cut into two pieces to make the move. I was told that cutting houses apart and then putting them back together is also very easy. The people who moved my house didn't have to cut it in pieces, and they only moved it back about what looks like 50-75 feet on the same lot.

Since it had been let deteriorate by previous owners, my brother assumed the newest owner would buy it as a teardown, but he found out that the owner wants to put about a million dollars into renovating it. Perhaps he'll put the old verandah on the front again. and lose the horrible yellow and bring back the white with green trim with which I grew up.
