Twenty Two Dead. So Far.

In Maine. Little, largely rural Maine. Lewiston's the second largest city in Maine, with around 37,000, people. 

Shooter's still out there, after 22 murders and 50-60 injured. They apparently know who he is, and he may be known for mental

Oh, and learning that there's a difference between a mass shooter and a spree shooter, is not what I needed to learn tonight.

Hope all your family is fine. Are they close to, or living in, any of the affected communities?

I just posted an update that indicates the death toll is apparently only 18, not 22, and the number of wounded is apparently 13, not 50-60. I didn't obey a reportorial rule; don't pass on unvetted information as fact, especially if it's only from one source. I apologize for that.

They were nearby, but not affected, so there's that anyway. didn't hear back until this AM because everyone slept through it.

Indeed. But until we can win an unbeatable majority in both of our Congressional Houses, and replace at least two, and preferably three, Supreme Court Justices, we won't get stronger gun laws. I love this country, eveen though it's not my birth country, but its gun madness, its political madness is getting harder and harder to deal with emotionally.

I just posted an update, with marginally better fatality and injury numbers. I apologize for having gone with first reports without double-checking them.

That's my emotional response as well - the FAFO reesponse to 2nd Amendment fanatics. But, as I told cmcmck, until we can win an unbeatable majority in both of our Congressional Houses, and replace at least two, and preferably three, Supreme Court Justices, we won't get stronger gun laws.

The tiniest of silver linings is that "only" 18 people were killed, not 22, and "only" 13 were injured, not 50-60. I shouldn't have gone off half-cocked with the first, unvetted report.

I live about an hour north of Lewiston-Auburn. I'm safe, if pretty stunned still. Initial reports said 22 people, but officials haven't given more confirmation than "15-20" killed. A friend who lives in Lewiston and works at Bates College there has been posting regularly on Facebook. This morning she said so far she hasn't heard of any Bates students among the dead. I'm here, stunned, but here.

Given one of the locations was a bowling alley having a "Youth Night" event, I'm glad that the numbers are less.

I understood it was your emotional reaction in your personal journal--not an official news report, but I also understand your feeling guilty for having jumped at the initial, unvetted reports. I just wanted to let you know it might not be as bad as it initially sounded.
