These Things Occur to Me

It's bound to be a ... day ... when you start off by forgetting to put the top on the blender in which you are making your breakfast smoothie.

A rant about age gaps in relationships.  )
My editor, let me praise her. She's a good editor. I really like her.

The first MCU fic is edging toward 3,000 words. I wish I could wrap it up faster than I'm going to be able to.

Have I mentioned lately that I love The Expanse? Have I mentioned how it manages to be as close to realistic hard science fiction as one can get, while still telling a multi-pronged and gripping story filled with real three-dee characters, a complicated and fascinating political plot, and thoughtful social extrapolations? I have? Well, you'll probably hear me gush over the series again. We've just watched the sixth episode in the first 10-episode season, and I am very glad that it got renewed by SyFy.

I am grateful that today I saw a cardinal (male, in all his red glory) on the greensward across the street from my window.

So ... Gratitude.

I am grateful for these flowers. They bloom for a very short time every spring in Chicago, just a breath ahead of the forsythia bushes. To me, they are spring. There are some stretches of Ridge Road in Evanston where lawns are blanketed in the bluest blue for a few glorious days. I've always told myself I'd take photos of the flowers, and I finally got around to doing so. No enhancement needed for this picture.  Happy Spring!

Other things for which I'm grateful:

I'm finally fic writing again. Three separate things (Chapter 26 of H&M, and two MCU tales) all at the same time. I'm not complaining - you go with what works, right?

I'm going to try to be grateful for the surgical team that will be working with BB this Thursday, but I'm not grateful to the "support" team at the surgeon's office. Incompetent twits. But this is a post about gratitude, so we'll leave that alone.

I'm grateful for the clarity of mind that descended on me this afternoon, and which has convinced me - or nearly convinced me - not to run for Chicago NewsGuild local president. Being acting president is bidding fair to convince me to run the other way. Screaming.

I am, as always, grateful for BB, and grateful for all of you. I hope your weekends were good, and that your week began well, and will end well.

Monday Gratitude

1. I made it through Monday!
2. I went to a meeting and came back to Rogers Park ... and found a parking spot within two minutes of getting into the neighborhood, and only 1 block away from home. HURRAH!!!!! (And thank you, Great Spider!)
3. I did my exercises, making it three days in a row!
4. I'm getting to bed before midnight!
5. I'm - whups, I used up all my exclamation points. Oh dear.

This and That

As
[personal profile] selenak  says, April's Fool Day is a bit pointless in a world where Donald Trump has a serious shot at the White House, isn't it? In slightly better news, Bernie stands a chance of winning the Wisconsin primary next Tuesday, and appears to be closing the gap between himself and Clinton in New York, supposedly her home territory. I await those primaries with great interest.

I am so very pleased that  Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū is getting a new season. This anime, which sort of re-introduced me to the Japanese art (some consider it a minor art; I don't) of rakugo, is for me the best anime of the past season, and it may just be a tiny masterpiece. So, hurrah!

Got through this week, and I'm grateful for that!

I developed a new drink for the weekend, involving a frozen strawberry in a martini glass, over which I pour .75 shot of Sayuri brand nigori sake and 1.25 shots of gin.
I call it a strawberry blossom, and in my un-Japanese that comes out as hana ichigo. I'm having one now.

I did some more work on Hearts & Moons, but need to sit down and do more serious plotting (with a map of my setting) than I normally do. I have an ACTION! SCENE! at the heart of this chapter, and I need to know just what I'm doing - and more importantly, what each of my characters is doing - to make it read believably. I am, however, very pleased to have come up with the winning stroke for our heroes. So it's buckle down this weekend,
[personal profile] kaffy_r . (I won't let the oven cleaning come between me and my writing, although I swear to god, I'm going to get that damned oven cleaned.

Give Me an "F,"  Give Me an "A," Give Me an "N," and a "Fic"!

Sort of lengthy, I recognize, but I hope I can be forgiven. I'm so very grateful to be able to say that I finished another
[community profile] fandom_stocking  fic today, and posted it, for [personal profile] jessalrynn ! Hurrah!

And now, I'm heading to bed ... for which I'm still very grateful. Heh.

Gratitude Can Sometimes Be Hard

But: I am grateful that I did a full day's worth of useful, reporter-type things.
I am grateful that my poor FB will be able to get a very bad tooth taken out tomorrow night, and that the extraction could eventually make him feel better.
I am grateful for my cats, two of who kept me nice and warm on the couch tonight.
I am grateful for another two paragraphs on my fic.
I'm grateful for the silly text conversation I had with my Sunday night dinner colleagues this afternoon.
I'm grateful for my comfortable bed, to which I now repair.
And I'm grateful for all of you.

The Necklace My First-Born Gave Me

Ijgeoff wanted to see the lovely necklace FB gave me yesterday. It's a simple Seal of Rassilon and I think it's gorgeous. So I took a couple of pictures, and here they are!  The first one
I took on our marble living room tabletop. The second one I took on my bed coverlet. It's a little harder to see, it but it feels kind of luxurious to me.

Sunday Going on Monday

I'm tired and definitely wary about heading into the week, because there's word coming down that the very few of us reporters who have a single town beat, or a two town beat, are going to be shuffled around, given new beats, and generally upended because the company undoubtedly won't replace the six reporters who took buyouts and will simply try to stretch us even thinner than we are. I don't look forward to that - but sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, eh? I'd rather focus on things I'm grateful for.

1. I am grateful that I got to spend a delightful evening with one current colleague and two former colleagues, having dinner at a Nepalese restaurant, catching up with each other, and laughing a whole lot. Laughter and friendship; absolutely necessary to one's spiritual health.
2. I'm grateful that I raised a fannish son, particularly one who is a fan of Who. I came home from dinner, to find that FB had spent one day at C2E2, the Chicago version of Comic Con, and while there, he'd bought me a lovely necklace, featuring a black and white pendant with the Gallifreyan symbol on it. I'm wearing it now. It's lovely.
3. I am so glad I finally got around to making coffee jelly with unused coffee that had been sitting in the kitchen for a bit (luckily, coffee lasts a long time before it's unusable).  Coffee jelly is a wonderful dessert from my childhood, (and is a also a big dessert in Japan, which I find amusing). I've made it before, but I wasn't sure I'd get around to making this time, because procrastination is one of my big problems these day. But I made it, and I am very pleased with myself. So I'm grateful that I didn't procrastinate.
4. I'm grateful for a burst of energy that has allowed me to almost complete the fic that had been log-jammed for so long, and for whom I'd written a paragraph last week. It went from about 390 words this morning to 930 tonight. That makes me very happy.
5. Finally, I'm grateful that I was able to take a picture of this sign, as BB and I did some shopping chores this afternoon.

Today was indeed good, but I have few spoons to talk about it.

I am grateful for two things today:

Weekends.
Sleep.

Gratitude Redux

1. I'm grateful that today is Friday - it's always good to know I have a two day vacation coming up!
2. I'm grateful that the weather predicts a partly sunny day, and that I have a lovely sweater to wear in the March chill.
3. I'm grateful that today is the day I'm paid, which will cover our mortgage this month.
4. I' m grateful that an experiment I tried this week, going without my daily painkiller for three days, worked out with only a little extra pain in my foot and in my thumbs. I'm going to go back to taking my daily level, because I do need my thumbs for my work, and also because there's no reason for me to deal with extra pain, or pain at all - it's not a mark of moral strength, no matter what Puritan detritus taints our American cultural attitudes - but it reminded me that, no, I'm not either physically or psychically dependent on the painkiller.
5. I'm grateful that tonight I will mix myself a big-ass-martini and enjoy time with BB.

Grateful, Delayed

I missed Tuesday and Wednesday, largely because I'm me and can't seem to hold to any kind of schedule, but partly because I was extremely angry about something yesterday, the day I'd planned to catch up on Tuesday, and ended up not being able to look for things about which I could be grateful.

So here's my Thursday list:

1. The sun is shining, and it's lifting my spirits.
2. Yesterday, amidst all my unhappiness, I was still able to write a paragraph on a story I still owe for
[community profile] fandom_stocking . And for me recently, getting a paragraph done is good; it will help me get that next paragraoph, and perhaps the next as well.
3. BB is going to a second eye doctor today to more information on how to improve his vision, something that's been hanging fire for awhile. I'll leave more specific information out because it's not my story to tell, but it marks another step on the road to him being able to read comfortably once more, and that means a lot to both of us.
4. I had a lovely interview yesterday with a 90-year-old woman, who gave me a hug at the end of our talk - unexpected but very sweet.
5. I got an interview for my weekly "go out and get an interview" story with no difficulty on Tuesday. I knew who I wanted to interview, an election judge I know from past elections, I went to the polling place and sure enough, he was there; I asked him if he wanted to do the interview, he said yes, we had an enjoyable 10 minute chat, and the assignment was done. Hurrah!
6. My three cats, all of them large, all of them affectionate, and all of them with their own amazing personalities.

Grateful

Taking my cue from a number of folks on my friends' list, I'm going to find one or more things that I can be happy about each day.

Today is Monday. What am I grateful for?

1. Bob. Always and forever.
2. It's March, almost half-way through, and that means spring is coming.
3. Daylight Savings Time means it's not getting dark at 4:30 and 5 p.m. anymore. That's good!
4. I got my exercises done first thing in the morning today, after four days of not doing them.
5. I'm eating a tiny bit less starch and carbohydrate; I haven't nearly cut down to where I want to, yet, but it's a start.

Hmm. Five - that's not bad.
