Job One: Remember that Computers Are Stupid

Job Two: bake Bob's favorite cookies to thank him for setting up my new laptop, and putting up with the occasional stupidity that's part of dealing with ones and zeroes.

We both knew it would take a couple of days, or even more than that, and I'm trying to be patient as he preps the new one (an Asus Vivo) so that we can download all my files from my slowly dying Lenovo, files that have been downloaded onto a delightful little red portable 2T hard drive.

That drive may will come in handy after the transfer, since I might need to keep it connected to my new laptop for a few weeks, or maybe months. My Lenovo has 1.82 T of storage, whilst my Asus only has 1T. We'll eventually see about getting a new, larger, drive in the Asus, but I don't foresee me using up the 1T of storage the Asus has.

I've named the little hard drive Ada, and my new laptop is officially Alice-Alyx. It's the first time I've named a laptop, but it seemed the right thing to do with this one. I'm laughing a bit at myself, but hell, why not name some things that will help keep me happy for a good long time?

Now one of the remaining questions is whether Alice-Alyx will recognize my Samsung Galaxy ear buds. We tried to get them paired up yesterday, and the Asus laughed at us. Once again, I'm reminded that computers are stupid; they only do what we tell their ones and zeroes to do.

In the non-computer part of the weekend, I was able to get in touch with a skiffy fannish acquaintance whose holiday card came back to me a bit ago. It turns out that he and his partner had indeed moved from the address I had for him, so I can send him something soon, and most definitely this coming holiday season.

I also cleaned the bathroom, and sorted a small mountain of paperwork that had grown so high it was in danger of toppling over. I'm terrible at organizing and sorting, but I managed to do it today. I'm inordinately proud of myself. (I probably shouldn't be quite so loudly proud, because the universe will undoubtedly send something my way to punish me for such hubris. Heh.)

So that's my excitement for the weekend, and I am very happy that that's the most excitement I've had to deal with. Compared to this time last week, it's easy-peasy.

And, Wow, the Bicycle's Just Fine

It's just me who's been a little lackadaisical. I've been busy, mind you, doing adult-type stuff. And I'm happy about that.

It's nice to be able to finally post, and not be whining about things.

Computer success, FTW! )

Wills and credit cards, woo-hoo! )

Finally, returning to better things than adulthood: I'm on my fifth, yes fifth, Arcane AU fic. I still can't get it out of my system. I'm also very close to finishing the novel (yes, I know I say that a lot, but at this point, we're close to the execution of one villain by our two protagonists, and the subsequent upending of their world's economic and political order. Sort of. I'm writing both at the same time, bouncing from one to the other. And I need to finish my 8,000-word-thus-far 13th Doctor massive crossover fic. Oh, and the original short story ...

Huh. A lot of writing to do. Also, editing the young gentleman's fic is still on the table.

There. Now you're caught up!

Wait, I successfully made cabbage rolls tonight, and I'm still making our bread, with varying degrees of success. So there's that as well.

Oh, and Trump minion Peter Navarro got arrested, handcuffed, and put in leg irons today. Life is good.

Well, That Wasted My Day

Opened my computer, as normal today, and quickly discovered that something (I suspect one of the programs I have that cleans computer files and registries rather more than I want them to) had decided a) my default search engine was Bing and b) my default browser was Internet Explorer.

Luckily, I realized equally quickly that I had to pay attention to the operational bones of my laptop - i.e. the registry - to fix the problem.

I tried thrice to return my laptop to an earlier version of the registry. Twice, it failed. The third time, on the "restore point" that I thought least apt to help, worked.

I went to the registry because BB spent the last two days fixing problems with the bones of his desk top, including reinstalling drivers, etc., and finally had to do a "restore registry" to fix his problem. It took three tries on his computer as well. Ah, coincidence. But I thought that if his problem could be solved in that fashion, mine might as well. Ah, success!

I'm now back to where I should be. I'm also cancelling two of my paid file and registry programs, and modifying the one that's left so that it doesn't do things I don't want it to do. But those two actions will take place tomorrow. Because I wasted three and a half hours fixing this shit, and I have no more computer-related spoons.

And on a completely unrelated note, I am extremely tired of my laptop putting "e's" where they're not supposed to go (as in "probleem," "Beecause," and "deefault seearch") and not putting them where they are needed. The first problem is the worst one. It occasionally disappears, and then reappears, like a gremlin I hoped would leave the house, and instead hangs around, grinning psychotically, on my doorstep and peering into my livingroom window. All of this, despite several attempts at cleaning the keyboard. My heavy hand has fucked it up, I fear.

Because of that, I just spent about three minutes fixing *checks* 25 double or triple "e's" and five somewhat related keyboard snafus. Go, me.

The Dangers of Feeling Good About Monday

Well, at least the dangers of feeling good about a reasonably productive Monday, that being the risk of falling into despair when Tuesday is nothing but online solitaire or something of that sort. I suppose that having a productive Tuesday is the best route to take but oh, how that can be difficult.

I'm getting to know my new computer, whose name I've altered slightly to Le Nouveau Lad, since a) a DC fan made gentle remonstrance (or at least wondered if the original sobriquet might portend a character with too much interest in surveillance) and b) I think it's probably better to gift my new kid with a name free of commercial hindrances.

Maybe I should just call him Larry. Or Leonard. Or Louis. Things to ponder ....

Also
, I need new icons.
kaffy_r: A cartoon dog ponders reality (Subjective pup)
Say Hello to Lenovo Lad

It's not a very original name, and it sounds rather like one of those DC Legion of Superheroes types, but it's nicely alliterative, and until I can think of something better, that's what this new laptop's handle will be. Updates as necessary, of course. The keyboard is somewhat larger than I'm used to, and the power cord is not as sturdy as my old HP's. However, you can tell this is a young and healthy machine; my old one was getting so slow (and not because there was too much on the hard drive, just because it was getting old and tired)

On the 7th day of watching my calories. I managed to stay under my calories today, in part because I did 20 rather painful minutes of moderate walking to and from the grocery store; 10 minutes to and 10 minutes from. I'm truly out of condition when such a walk makes my legs feel as if they're burning up. Still, my reward was being able to have two hot dogs on brioche buns, with a dill pickle and two tablespoons of saurkraut.

WHAT??!?

Tomorrow I leap into work again, but it's been nice to only have spent only one hour of work time during the weekend.

I'm also feeling rather pleased at having written a five page letter and mailed it off to a friend. Not only that, but the letter was handwritten, not erely typed and printed out. One of the lost arts, I know; and I admit that my writing hand cramped up really badly by the end of the third page. I think that it's because of the RA, and because I've always had a bad habit of gripping pens really really tightly. Still, it got done and, by god, I plan to continue doing that.

I also read two relatively long articles in a back issue of The Nation - the hard copy, no less - without getting up and doing something else in the middle of the operation. I'll consider that another win in my campaign to better my attention span.

I got a little more done on my latest story; not much, but enough to make me feel good about where the story's going.

Vacations and I Do Not Play Well Together. Not Even on Christmas

I mentioned to BB earlier tonight that I don't believe I've had a completely injury- or illness-free vacation in years. And, I said, it's got to be me at fault, not the vacations. (A bit like the nice boy who wonders why he picks so many mean girls who break up with him ... it's not them, buddy ....)

Blatherings under here )
I am a very silly woman. Then again, I am a silly woman in pain, whose closest relationship over the last 36 hours, other than with her beloved, has been with her heating pad.

Gah.

But the Christmas tree still looks beautiful. And my collection of TARDIS ornaments now stands at two, thanks to FB and Miss Em, and that's wonderful. So, pain or not, today has not been a total loss. Also, I've learned a lot about narwhals For Reasons, and that's also cool.

Question for My Dreamwidth Friends

Has your mood theme disappeared? By which I mean the little emoticon some of us use at the bottom of a post, the one that illustrates whether we feel happy, sad, drained, hurried, accomplished, etc.

I ask because yesterday the little emoticon themes I use (nothing fancy, just a little rabbit that is sometimes animated and sometimes not), just disappeared. The written description remains, but the bunny has vanished. I know that DW did some code pushes and wholesale changes ... I suppose that means I have to go through their description of changes to see if any of them affected this.

The Universal Law of Packing

Here I am, sitting in the Spring Garden Road branch of the Halifax Public Library; I'm less than 24 hours away from my trip home, I've said my goodbyes to my mother (and can say with cautious optimism that she is on the admittedly long road to recovery) and in a couple of hours will be picked up by my brother, taken to his Sackville home and will sack out until 4 a.m. to start my journey home. I've had a lovely lunch with an old friend, and it's been wonderful.

You know how one almost always forgets something while packing to return home from trips. (You don't? Then you're definitely not from my family.) Well, I was more or less congratulating myself on having only lost/left behind one thing; my favorite dress cardigan, a designer cardigan that I found at Boutique Sally Ann for $4 bucks or so. Simply couldn't find it, even after I went back to a couple of places I might have left it. It's dissipated into thin air, so I shall just revisit the second hand shop and go on a hunt for a new one ... uh ... where was I?

Oh, yes. I was congratulating myself on having packed everything I needed to. And then I opened my computer case to type this post, and realized I left my power cord/adapter 60 miles away, in my mother's apartment. Luckily, there's an electronics store about three blocks from here, on my way to the 6:40 p.m. rendezvous point with Little Brother. And the pouring rain seems to have settled down to nothing more than a cold, unpleasant drizzle. This should mean I should only be extremely damp and not soaked when I get to the rendezvous point.

Sigh.

Ah, well. The trip - despite having been necessitated by something horrible - has gone relatively well, in that I gave my mother comfort as much as possible. I visited her a minimum of two hours every day while I was here, and was able to talk to my brother about how her care will go forward. I'm more optimistic about her recovery, especially her cognitive recovery, than I once was. These are all good things. So getting wet while going to buy a new power cord is an extremely small thing.

I Can Haz Proper Cutz Nao!!

Yes I can! I am the proud fixer of the stupid LJ "scissors icon" cut denoter on my journal. I know that sounds rather silly, since I was directed to the fix by other people (thanks [personal profile] sallymn  and[personal profile] ljgeoff , for pointing me in the right direction), but here's the thing. Although the patch was already and ready to paste into the space awaiting it in the CSS coding area , and I knew I could use it, because my journal is in the right LJ style, I needed to find the right code for my journal's background color, because I don't have a plain white background.

And no one had said where I could find that.

Well. Did I let that dissuade me? Not at all. I figured out where to go to look for the coding, figured out (sort of) what the hell "layers" and "children" were, then clicked through to where I figured the color codes were. I couldn't find anything that looked like my shades of green, despite knowing I was in the right place. And then I thought it through some more, and realized I'd been looking at the proper code as I sat there. I tried it out, and - yay! - it worked.

So, even though I'm sure I've used the wrong terms to explain what I did, and even though I still retain my membership in the Sub-Luddite Club, I erased the damned scissors, and I am proud. Excuse me, while I shake my head at myself. Heh.

And speaking of shaking one's head at oneself, I've had a couple of weird dreams lately.
And I shall proceed to tell you at boring length about them. )

No I didn't get much more written on "Hearts and Moons," why do you ask?

  • First off, I'm not certain I like the new rich text set up,  For one thing, it doesn't seem to want to put bullets where I want them to go, without a lot of foofaraw. For another, it doesn't seem to have the indent feature which I occasionally enjoyed. Still, I can't be certain that my wariness may not simply be my "we fear change" reaction to anything.

  • Secondly, and of far more import chez Casakaffyr, the incredible BB has successfully swapped out the motherboard on his desktop. There are a few things left to do, but he did it! That has allowed him to return to the computer he obviously missed (he's not a fan of my laptop screen, and of course, his 'puter has a more bells and whistles, moulded to his particular tastes. He approached it as he does everything he deems to be a challenge: a lot of research, study and prep work and — voila! — success!!! He really is brilliant, you know.

Last Day of Vacation

And I spent rather a lot of it in my car, in rush hour, in the blazing sun, with too little food in me. As a result, the trip — to the nearest Microcenter to drop off BB's dead computer, and to buy badly needed provisions at the nearby, but confusingly placed, Costco — brought out a great deal of snappishness in Team kaffyrBB. We survived, of course, especially once I got a little bit of food in me. On the other hand, I got home in the nick of time, because I was completely exhausted. We got home around 6:30 p.m., and now, just before midnight Chicago time, I'm still feeling the exhaustion that seems to stem a great deal from overheating. (This is not, I must point out, actual medical-type heat exhaustion, which has specific symptoms that I don't have. I'm simply rather unhealthily exhausted by the heat, in a way that seems to be specific to heat. And I maintain that there is a difference. What?)

Shortly after we got back home, the Microcenter people called, and told BB it would cost $400 for them to replace the motherboard and the processor. He told them not to bother. He'll go in, pick it up, and pick up a motherboard and a processor and replace the items himself. He can do that; he just wasn't able to diagnose the original problem. Now that they've done it for him, he can take it from there.

Personal journalling — are we sure Sam Pepys done it this way?[/Waylon]

Oh, and Dreamwidth still can't decide what layout it thinks I have. It goes back and forth between two. Sometimes, if I log out and log back in, the right layout pops up, but that didn't happen this time. Well, at least it's an intriguing  problem, rather than a large one.

Yay! I may be able to post using something other than a phone! The local library has wireless, and I'll be able to get some time and catch up with the 20th century.

In the meantime, I'm in a much better headspace about the trip- probably a function of being at my Mom's place, and being able to hang up clothes, and stop living out of a suitcase.

More to come, later, I hope.

Things I Learned Today
  1. Do not, as an accidental animist, expect to say goodbye to your 1993 Mercury Tracer without feeling as if you have just told a beloved pet it was going to go to a nice farmer in the country.
  2. Do not (make a note of this, now) pick up a AA battery, put it in your front jeans pocket with a car key, then sit down at your desk and expect nothing bad to happen. What actually will occur - ah, the wonder of battery-to-metal chemistry, a thing of which you have not, heretofore, been aware - is that you will shortly realize that the tender skin of your upper leg, just where it disappears into your torso, is burning. You will then jump up from your desk in a most undignified manner, whilst fishing about in said pocket, burning your fingers and cursing, then throwing both battery and car key onto your desk. Your leg will hurt ever so slightly for the rest of the afternoon, and your colleagues will laugh at you.
  3. Do not attempt to figure out why your faux-pod (hereinafter known as Portable Disk Drive K) persists in telling the PC from which you wish to import music that it is write-protected, at least not without the wisdom of BB beside you. When BB is bed-ridden and recuperating from emergency tooth extraction surgery, be patient, and wait for the morrow.
  4. Do not - do not - forge ahead with your reckless, unknowing voyage into computer country, and think that you can get rid of Portable Disk Drive K  - no matter how convinced you are that this is a perfectly reasonable method of solving your problem - without potentially dire consequences. Previous admonishments involving the presence of BB still obtain.
