It's Ba-aaack ....

At some distant time, unimaginably alien to us, our ancient universe will die. Dead planets will swing around cold suns, circling through darkened constellations that themselves will wheel through galaxies dark and cold as black ice - each one streaming away in all directions from the rumor of light and heat, into the vast and endless Stygian dark.

And I'll still be plugging away at this damned meme.

Fashion - One Day You're In, The Next You're Stupid
I used to love Project Runway, back when it was on Bravo. Yes, I wear jeans and untucked old shirts more often than I ever wear stylish clothes - hello, middle-aged spread - but fashion fascinates me. And Project Runway is the only competition-based reality show that seemed to put at least as much emphasis on real talent as it did on carefully maneuvered and edited drama. (No, Top Chef doesn't count. I can't judge food that's only pixels to me.)

In fact, I loved Project Runway enough that I tuned out the last couple of seasons more because of scheduling conflicts than any unhappiness with it, or its move to Lifetime. Hey, as long as Tim Gunn still presided, gentle, elegant and brilliant, over the workroom and the designers' hearts, souls, and taste levels, I was happy. I'd even learned to deal with Michael Kors' bitchiness, Nina Garcia's capricious standards and Heidi Klum's occasionally cold-eyed world view. So I was pleased this season, when I was able to catch at least a third of the episodes.

That included the last two before the two-part finale, and, of course, Thursday night's finale.

Gah. Now behind a cut, because I should have waited for more than the West Coast feed )

Infrastructure

External, Internal

The Externals
  • The plumbers are gone, their deeds of heroism done, their rodding and sewer caps having comforted me and mine.
  • I've put all the rags used to hold back the waters last night through the wash, and the next step is to clean the floors tomorrow.   And these plumbers? Oh, about nine gazillion times better than the last ones, I'm thinking. Hell, they even gave us a free jacket. No, really. One of them left their Official Plumbing Company hoodie jacket here. When we called the office to alert someone, they asked if there were any things in the pockets. No ... and hey, presto, it was bequeathed to us.
  • Also, they revised their initially worrisome (she said, with astonishing understatement) "This. Is. Raw. Sewage." analysis. It wasn't raw sewage. It's just that regular waste water that has aged grease and unidentified biocrud marinating in it - rather like our own lower g.i. tract biocrud marination system - well, let's just say the resemblance between the two products is breathtaking. No. Really. It got hard to breathe in here. But, technically speaking, while it may have walked like a duck, it wasn't duck shit.
  • I have had a shower. Let me say that again, because it was so good to think about. I have had a shower.
The Internals
It's all infrastructure of one kind or another. )

Scattershot and Un-Meta Thoughts on The End of Time, Part 1
I didn't get (or haven't yet gotten) an overall thematic response to this episode. That's not, however, to say that I'm speechless about it. The short version? I liked it, was moved by it, and thought it was put together with the usual crazy quilt of intelligence, cheese and sporadic creative laziness.
Some of my immediate reactions follow, most of them are cribbed and edited comments I made over at Television Without Pity's episode thread.
(And speaking of TWoP, Jacob's recap of Waters of Mars is up. Damned good stuff, and far more filled with love than my meta-ramblings.)
As for EoT1, I've watched the episode twice thus far, and I liked it even more the second time.

...and the rest is underneath. )

Belated, but Heartful
Many heartfelt birthday wishes go to a man I respect greatly; [livejournal.com profile] mostlikely2  . Jacob, you are one of the most gifted writers it's been my pleasure to read. But your writing is only a reflection of you. You have a fierce belief in what is right, in what is good, and in how you fill your own place in the universe. And you fill it well - with wit, with understanding (and more than occasional asperity); with curiosity, with wisdom and love, and with grace. May your life over the next year be filled with good things, and few fools. It's an honor to know you in the small way I do.

(And I may disagree with your reaction to the BSG finale, but I love the way you write about it. Heh.)

A welcoming note

Greetings!

I have this wonderful page - have had it for some time now - and I have yet to use it for anything. Today, however, I shall use it to welcome you. Some very nice people have already been kind enough to add me to their friends lists, and I'm honored. Please take a moment to read my very wordy introduction, and feel free to leave comments here, although I have yet to say anything smart (or stupid) enough to elicit comments.

One of the reasons I've become even marginally active on LiveJournal is because I am part of a group of people who are fans of the BBC television show Doctor Who, and also dedicated fans of Television Without PIty, also known as TWoP, and a site where fans of television, or specific television shows, can gather to review show episodes and talk about all things related to television or to specific shows. I've been lucky enough as a TWoP member to meet and become part of a vibrant, witty, totally worthwhile online Doctor Who community within its boundaries.

Until recently, a huge part of my enjoyment stemmed from the recaps of DW shows done by Austin-based writer Jacob Clifton. Unfortunately, TWoP is no longer recapping the show, and I am only one of many who are mourning the loss of Jacob's recaps. A group of us hope to convince TWoP and its corporate parent, BRAVOTelevision, to reverse that position, and to that end have created a webpage called  The Oncoming Recaps . I'd love you to visit the page, because you might find yourself interested in our campaign.

The wonderful people who help maintain our Recaps site have put together lots of information, including a FAQ, about our efforts. I would be honored if you'd visit the site and consider joining us!
