For various skewed powers of pleasure, I suppose, but I found it an excellent way to start the week.

Natal Excellence
Monday, 22 March 2010 04:04 pmHappy Birthday,
mostlikely2 .
Sometimes there are writers who can connect with readers with breathtaking immediacy because they seem to have the gift of saying "This is what I feel; this is who I am; this is what I have experienced. I am your brother, and we share this world, and I share some of your heart."
Sometimes there are writers who take readers to new places, who say "Look out beyond yourself; consider this possibility; don't be afraid at the fear or discomfort, push pass it and look at what you'll find on the other side."
Sometimes there are writers who see connections between themselves and others, between the roots and trunk and limbs and leaves of the tree of the universe, between heart and soul, between groin and brain, between heaven and hell, between the soup and the nuts (because they know how to laugh, too.)
Sometimes there are writers who love, and demand, and grieve, and rejoice, and are hard on their readers, and embrace them, and take them on the same dangerous, wonder-ful journey they are trying to navigate for themselves.
Rarely do they come together in one person.
They do in you.
May this year be full of challenge and success, of grace and laughter, both personally and professionally.

Infrastructure
Tuesday, 26 January 2010 01:40 amExternal, Internal
The Externals
( It's all infrastructure of one kind or another. )
The Externals
- The plumbers are gone, their deeds of heroism done, their rodding and sewer caps having comforted me and mine.
- I've put all the rags used to hold back the waters last night through the wash, and the next step is to clean the floors tomorrow. And these plumbers? Oh, about nine gazillion times better than the last ones, I'm thinking. Hell, they even gave us a free jacket. No, really. One of them left their Official Plumbing Company hoodie jacket here. When we called the office to alert someone, they asked if there were any things in the pockets. No ... and hey, presto, it was bequeathed to us.
- Also, they revised their initially worrisome (she said, with astonishing understatement) "This. Is. Raw. Sewage." analysis. It wasn't raw sewage. It's just that regular waste water that has aged grease and unidentified biocrud marinating in it - rather like our own lower g.i. tract biocrud marination system - well, let's just say the resemblance between the two products is breathtaking. No. Really. It got hard to breathe in here. But, technically speaking, while it may have walked like a duck, it wasn't duck shit.
- I have had a shower. Let me say that again, because it was so good to think about. I have had a shower.
( It's all infrastructure of one kind or another. )
Awesome Airlock
Passing by one of my local PBS stations, and it happens to be showing Dances With Wolves. (Really, WTTW? I mean, I like the movie, in spite of, and because of, Kevin Costner and such, but ... really?) And who did I see? Mary McDonnell, as Stands With a Fist.. And I was in love, because ... because I've missed Madame President. Sure, this was a younger woman, but the eyes and the smile, and the hair, and ... Damn, I miss Laura Roslin.

Awesome Is as Awesome Does
And Battlestar Galactica does. Oh, my, yes.
I love this frakkin'* show.
As of tonight, ("The Oath" S4.5E03) its awesome quotient continued, grew, kicked ass and broke hearts.
Is it Friday yet?
*So much that I feel absolutely no shame about using a curse word that exists nowhere but on the show's stages and in the minds and mouths of fans like me.

The show, she goes on....
Tuesday, 10 June 2008 12:06 am...and we're dragging people into her. Victory is ours...
I just realized today that we have, in an office of 20 people, 6 rabid Battlestar Galactica fans. That may not seem like many, but consider the percentage, given the statistical niche into which the show slides. *counts on fingers, because math is hard* Yup, almost a third.
It's impressive, particularly since at least three of the six were successfully proselytized by one of our younger colleagues. Now our only problem is that three of the six are behind the current run. My boss is half-way through Season 1, our uber office boss, (a generally non-TV watching gentleman who was initially extremely wary of getting into the series) has reached the end of the second season, I think, and the third person is about one or two shows back in the current season. But the glee with which I and the proselytizer observe the fruits of his labor is satisfying to this old skiffy fan, I must say.

Oho! She plays at being a critic! How droll!
Friday, 16 November 2007 01:25 amDarkness, Apocalypse, Joan Crawford Eyebrows.
or, I gave it a Six, Helena; it had a beat, you could dance to it.
So yes, I am a Battlestar Galactica fan. Not the one from the 1970s with the blue velvet capes, as I mentioned to a friend last week. And if it's Mormon, I can't make it out.
What it is is Real Good. It's a way to look into the black and gold heart of humanity, pull out some of our biggest loves, fears, gods and devils and give them separate names like End of the World and Cylon, like Death and Resurrection, like Politics and Family, like Space and Suns pointing the way home to Earth, like 49,000 left, like Lies and Heartbreak and Defeat and Concentration Camps and Terrorism and Identities mis-taken or otherwise, like False Saviors and True, like Cowardice, like Bravery, and Faith, and Loyalty, and Love, Love, Love...and then tell our story with them.
Also with flippy spaceships, hot robot babes and very, very tall hunky human guys, and squirrelly bat-shit crazy human genius doctor-types, emo towel-wearing Sons Of Kings and Machinery-wise Salt of the Earth types. And gun-toting kickass gals of human provenance, or something like (yeah, those hot robot babes, again.) And blowy-up things. And sex. Woot. Sex.
Fans? It has many. Actors? The best. Writers? Hell, yeah! Emmys? Hell, no! (Well, yeah, maybe in the tech categories.) It's skiffy for Christ sake! (Hey, but it did get a Peabody Award!) An end in sight? Why, yes. Its creator, Ron Moore, has decreed the coming (eventually) fourth season on the SciFi network to be the last.
And, as a way to increase interest in the last season, NBC-Universal, which owns SciFi, decided to take a BSG quasi-standalone Television Movie called - with stunning originality - "Battlestar Galactica: Razor" and put it out into a limited number of movie theaters across the nation. Devoted fans could get free tickets, and stand in line to get in. And that happened Monday. It's going to show up on television on Nov. 24th, I think, but NBC was counting on folks like me to fill the theaters.
Yeah, of course I went.
And of course I had some thoughts about it, even if they might be shorter than this stupid preamble once I write them down.
(So here's the deal. I'm gonna put the rest of this under a cut, because a) I may well mention spoilerific stuff, at least a teensy tiny bit, so if you didn't go the movie and you want to be all fresh and unknowing when it hits your TV screen, don't read any further. You've all been warned, you frakkers. (Yeah, that's a BSG euphemism for precisely what you think, and a lot of nay-sayers just cackle with "I'm not Them" glee when show fans use it, because they think we're all fringe-socialized Asperger's victims, and I really don't care, because I like it, because, you know? I'm one of the fringe-socialized Asperger's victims. So suck on it.) and b) because not all my friends are drooling with anticipation over my BSG experience and commentary.)
